Some of these photographs show Dona Ana County's Sheriffs since pre-civil
war days. This group of pictures was compiled and presented to the county by
former Sheriff Miguel Apodaca. The most famous chief law enforcement
officer of the county was Pat Garrett, the man who shot Billy the Kid.

Addendum : Jose M. Viramontes D: Age 57. Born in Jalisco, Mexico, Aug. 5, 1895. Been a resident of NM since age of two years. Completed grade school and entered employment in merchandise establishment at age of 12. Was self-employed from 1916-1933, when engaged as appraiser with Federal Land Bank of Wichita, KS. Later entered customs service in El Paso. Held position as field agent with corporation commission from 1935-1936. Held office as county Sheriff from 1937 to 1940. Self employed until reappointed Sheriff Oct. 1949. Father of 13 children, 11 living.
Joe G. Melendres R: Age 42, Born in Dona Ana, NM, Jan. 21 1910. Has been resident of New Mexico for life-time. Nov resident of 429 South San Pedro, Las Cruces. Completed grade school and four years of high school in Dona Ana Co. Experience: Has been engaged in grocery business, farming, retail stores and trucking. Is now engaged in liquor business. Held off for four years as constable in precinct 29.
