Old Clayton Cemetery

Old Clayton Cemetery is located about one mile southeast of Clayton. Clayton is located eight miles west of the Texas state line on US 56,64 and 87. Located in the far northeast part of the state. Union County is bordered by Colorado and Oklahoma as well as Texas.

Boggs, Remulda (nee Luna)
d. 6 Jun 1907. Clayton, Union, NM. m. 1846 to Thomas Oliver Boggs Mother: wife of Charles Bent by a previous marriage; he was one of the builders of Bent's Fort on the Arkansas River and the first governor of New Mexico Territory. Preceded in death by husband, Thomas Oliver Boggs, d. 29 Sep 1894, and by a son. Charlie, 1887, Survived by daughter, Minnie, who m. George A. Bushnell. bur 7 Jun 1907. Boggs, Thomas Oliver 
b. 22 Aug 1824, on the Neosho River, Indian Terr. among the Osage Indians. d. 29 Sep 1894, Clayton, Union, NM. He spent early years with his uncle. Col. Albert G. Boone, at Independence, MO; in 1844 was employed by Bent brothers 01 the Arkansas River (6 mi. below present city of La Junta, CO); Close friend and relative by marriage of Kit Carson. He moved to NM in 1876 from Boggsville, CO; was living in Springer, NM with wife and a daughter of Carson's, Josefita, in 1886. His son, Charlie, was shot and killed on a ranch on the Pinavetitos in north-eastern NM in 1887, Moved to Clayton, NM in 1888, after the founding of the town. Wife: Remulda Luna; m. 1846, daughter of wife of Charles Bent of Bent's Fort and former governor of the Territory by a former marriage; niece of Kit Carson's wife, "Aunt Josepha."

Father: Lilburn W. Boggs, 
former governor of MO; father md. twice: 
1) Julia Ann Bent, daughter of Judge Silas Bent of St. Louis, MO and sister of Charles and William Bent (& others) who were the builders of Bent's Fort on the Arkansas River. Two sons: Angus and Henry C. 
2) Panthea Grant Boone, granddaughter of Daniel Boone. 10 children; 7 boys and 3 girls; Thomas Oliver was oldest. John M. Boggs, Clayton, NM was a brother. Kit Carson d. in Tom Boggs' home in Boggsville, CO (near Las Animus) in 1868. Boggs reared and educated Carson's children. Survived by daughter, Minnie, wife of George A. Bushnell, a merchant in Clayton, NM who "administered to his needs until his death." bur in The Old Cemetery; Clayton, NM.
