Comments: Albuquerque, N. M., JUL 7-1938 "SIDELIGHTS ON EVENTS AND PEOPLE OF
ALBUQUERQUE IN THE OLD DAYS" http:memory.loc.gov/ammem/index.html (Being a
compilation of material gathered from time to time from various "old-timers" of
Albuquerque. The following material was obtained from Mrs. A. P. Keith, a
long-time resident of the City.).
"There the Y. M. C. A. now stands was the wholesale house of the father of Bob
Putney. The Albuquerque climate was different in those days, and the long porch
was extended all around the Putney Wholesale House, and this was where the
Indians would spread their blankets at night and dozens of them would sleep
there, and no questions were asked. The ox teams coming in from the East or the
West were driven on the Putney ground, the yoke removed from their necks, the
tired oxen laid down to sleep, and the goods packed in the wagons were perfectly
safe, and were eagerly unpacked the following morning."
From an Albuquerque newspaper, November 15, 1945:
Mrs. R.E. Putney, Old Resident, Dies
Prominent Socially Since Pioneer Days
Mrs. Robert E. Putney, who came to Albuquerque 49 years ago as a bride, died
Wednesday afternoon after suffering cerebral hemorrhages earlier in the day.
She was stricken in the morning and was taken to a hospital, where another
hemorrhage occurred shortly after noon.
Tuesday was Mrs. Putney's 70th birthday. She spent the day with friends and
dining downtown with her husband, Robert E. Putney, retired merchant, prominent
here for many years.
The Putneys resided at 218 North Ninth, where they moved to an apartment after
selling the handsome three-story residence at 1105 West Central where they had
lived for several decades.
Two sons, Donald, on the city police force, and Robert E. Putney, Jr., who is
coming here from Pasadena, Cal., are other family survivors; also eight
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The death of Mrs. Putney took one of the society leaders of early day
Albuquerque. The Putney home often was filled for gala receptions and hotel
luncheon parties for as many as 250 guests were frequently presided over by Mrs.
Putney as hostess.
Mrs. Putney was born in Lawrence, Ks., and was married there in September of
1896. Strong-Thorne Mortuary will be in charge of funeral arrangements.
