Thumbnail history of Fort Tularosa and Aragon, New Mexico
The Fort Tularosa and the Aragon area were first settled in 1693 by a Spanish family by the name of Aragon. Descendents of that family still live there.
In 1872, the Apache Indian Agency established Fort Tularosa in this area. The Ojo Caliente Apaches were moved there but the fort was abandoned in 1874,
due to the fact that Victorio’s band did not want to live there and kept running off. They wanted to live at Ojo Caliente, New Mexico. On May 11, 1880,
Sergeant George Jordon marched a detachment of 25 soldiers from K troop of the 9th Cavalry towards New Mexico with orders to protect Fort Tularosa from
potential attack, escort provisions, establish a supply depot and protect local settlers. He arrived on May 14, 1880 and started rebuilding the fort to
protect the people and stockade to house the livestock. Victorio struck settlers to the south of the fort, killing several people, then turned to
Fort Tularosa with forces 100 strong. Jordan, with 25 men repulsed the Indians and saved the settlers cattle. The Buffalo soldiers suffered no casualties,
while Victorio’s suffered several dead and wounded. Immediately following the battle, Colonel Edward Hatch’s 9th Cavalry arrived at the fort with a
large contingent giving chase to Victorio’s warriors. They escaped into Mexico. One soldier was shot from his horse about 10 or so miles from
Fort Tularosa and is buried where he fell.
Ten years after the Battle of Tularosa, George Jordon was awarded the Medal of Honor for his leadership in the battle. Five soldiers graves
with native stone markers are the only things left of Fort Tularosa. They are noted as:
Fort Tularosa Soldier #1
Fort Tularosa Soldier #2
Fort Tularosa Soldier #3
Fort Tularosa Soldier #4
Fort Tularosa Soldier #5
The graves can be located by going to the back fence, to a little left of middle and watch for the 5 stones.
