Friday, Aug. 9, 1918
Mrs. H. J. Cuniffe, of Las Cruces, died Tuesday morning. August 6, 1918, at her
home in Las Cruces. Mrs. Cuniffe was the widow of Mrs. Henry J. Cuniffe, at one
time a prominent merchant of this city. She was the mother of Mrs. Annie Riley,
of Colorado Springs; Miss Mary Cuniffe, deputy treasurer; Mrs. Oscar Lohman,
recently moved to El Paso; Mrs. C. O. Bennett, of Safford, Ariz; Mrs. D. V.
Peacock, of Las Cruces; Mrs. Felipe Lucero, Las Cruces; and of Louis Cuniffe, as
well as several other sons who preceded their mother to the grave. Services were
conducted at the Catholic church and interment was made in the Las Cruces
cemetery.

Death Of Mrs. Frank Hawley
The wide circle of friends of Mr. and Mrs. Frank D. Hawley were deeply grieved
to learn of the death of Mrs. Hawley, who passed away at her home in Hatch, NM.,
on Monday morning, Oct. 28th. She was ill only a few days, with pneumonia,
following influenza. Before giving up she had nursed Mr. Hawley through a
serious attack of the same dread disease.
Not quite (can’t read) months ago, Mr. and Mrs. Hawley were married in St.
Clement’s church, El Paso. After the wedding they went to Hatch to live, where
Mr. Hawley ha been employed by the Reclamation Service. Mrs. Hawley was a former
El Paso girl, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Livesay, now of Anthony, NM.
She was reared in Marfa, Texas and spent some time in La Mesa, NM where her
parents resided for several years. She is survived by her husband, Mr. Frank D.
Hawley, by two brothers, Charles F. Davis of El Paso, and Renick Livesay, now of
France in his country’s service; four sisters, Mrs. Alfred Greenwood of New Marz,
NM., Louise, Ruth and Katherine Livesay, all of Anthony. Mrs. Hawley was of a
quiet, sweet disposition, and had greatly endeared herself to a large host of
friends, who will greatly miss her. Mrs. Hawley was a communicant of the
Episcopal church, a woman of excellent Christian character.
Funeral services were held in Concordia cemetery on Friday morning, Oct 29th.
Burial was made in the Davis lot, after the Episcopal service by the Rev. Fuller
Swift, rector of St. Clement’s church. The deepest sympathy of the many friends
goes out to the bereaved young husband, to the father and mother, to the
brothers and sisters, who mourn their loss.

The remains of Thos. Insall, who died of pneumonia at an El Paso infirmary
Friday, were shipped to Las Cruces for interment Saturday. Mr. Insall was well
known here, having at one time been an employee of the Bowman Bank. He is
survived by his wife and six year old son. James Mundy, five year old son of Mr.
and Mrs. Wm. Mundy, died at his home Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock after a
very brief illness with influenza. Funeral services were conducted Sunday
afternoon at 3 o’clock by Rev. H. F. Vermillion, former pastor of the Baptist
church of Las Cruces, Rev.
Hunter Lewis of Mesilla Park, assisting.

Death of Donald Raine
Donald Raine, the 16 year old son of A. E. Raine, former foreman of The Rio
Grande Republic, died in Arizona last week of pneumonia, following influenza.
Donald’s mother died in July, 1917 of tuberculosis.
Friday, December 20, 1918
The funeral of Mrs. Petronila M. Stabillo was held at 7:30 Thursday morning at
the Catholic church. The deceased was 58 years of age and arrived here only a
week previous to her death to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Arthur
Desmarias, on Main street. She had been in poor health for some time. Much of
her life was spent in Chihuahua, Mexico, but for the past five years she had
been in El Paso. Her death was due to heart trouble.
Las Cruces Boy Dies At Camp Pike
Word was received Wednesday evening by Rev. and Mrs. W. C. Buell, of Las Cruces,
announcing the critical illness of their son, Lieut. Arthur Buell, at Officers’
Training Camp, at Camp Pike, Arkansas. A telegram Friday morning announced the
young man’s death on Thursday night. The death was due to pneumonia. Lieut.
Buell visited his parents here a few months ago, shortly after receiving his
commission as 2nd Lieutenant. Arthur spent ten years of his life here previous
to entering the U. S. Army and has a host of friends here who extend their
sincere sympathy to the bereaved parents of the young soldier.
Death of Donald Phelps
Donald Phelps died Saturday, Dec. 14, 1918, at his ranch, 32 miles southwest of
Hachita, NM of pneumonia. Donald was 29 years old last May. Deceased leaves a
wife and a one year old daughter, his mother, at West Plains, Mo., one brother,
Roy Phelps of Las Cruces and a brother at Detroit, Mich; a sister at La Mesa, NM
and a sister at Santa Rita, NM.
