Rosa Kropp Dead
The little 9-year old daughter of Frank Kropp, who had her leg so horribly
mangled in a horsepower Friday of last week, died Sunday evening at Lt. Luke's
hospital, El Paso. She was taken to El Paso last Saturday morning in charge of
Dr. Ridenour, at which place her leg was to have been amputated, should she
recover sufficiently, but she never recovered from the intense shock her nervous
system sustained. The remains were brought to Las Cruces, for funeral services
which took place Tuesday. The blow is a sad one to the mother who lies very low
from fever.

Juan Telles Shot and Killed
Carlos Telles Did The Bloody Deed.
Claims Self-Defense--Admitted to $3,000 Bail at Preliminary Hearing
Sunday morning a little before one o'clock two shots rang out on the night air.
those present in the Exchange and Tiptop Saloons ran out on the street and were
just in time to see a man walking toward the plaza, and at the same instant Juan
Telles staggered into the Tiptop saloon, saying he was shot and that Carlos
Telles had done the deed. The victim lived less that two hours, rapidly bleeding
to death from a bullet wound that cut the aorta above the heart. Deputy Clinton
Llewellyn ran after the fleeing man and overtook him in the plaza and commanded
him to halt. The man proved to be Carlos Telles and a pistol was found only a
few feet away, where he exigently had thrown it. He denied knowing anything of
the deed, but was hustled off to jail nevertheless. Wednesday the prisoner was
given a preliminary hearing and claimed self defense. He was admitted to bail in
the sum of $3,000 but as yet, has been unable to secure it. Fall and Pino
represent the defense. There were no actual eye witnesses to the tragedy but
several say Carlos Telles went into the Tiptop saloon and invited his victim out
into the street, and he went, telling several bystanders that Carlos intended to
shoot him. It is not known whether or not he was joking, for he had no weapon
with which to fight a duel. The two shots were the sequel. The step daughter of
Carlos Telles, who was a married woman, had been the mistress of Juan Telles,
and they were each convicted at a recent term f court and served a jail sentence
for adultery. This matter is said to have had something to do with the bad blood
which had existed between the two men, but in view of the bad reputation of the
woman it can scarcely be said to have furnished sufficient provocation to
murder. Carlos Telles defense will be a difficult one unless he can adduce a
keeper provocation than is known to the public at present. Juan Telles, the man
who was killed, was a blacksmith by trade but a musician around salons by
choice; he was a member of the militia company here and his funeral last Sunday
was held under their auspices
