NANEZ: Manuel M. Nanez, 59, of Silver City, died Sunday evening following an extended illness. Mr. Nanez was a lifelong resident of Grant County and retired from Chino Mines after 24 years of service. He was very active in the Democratic Party, was a member of the United Steelworkers of America Local 890 and was a member of the St. Francis Newman Center. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. with rosary service at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapels and Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday in the St. Francis Newman Center. NANEZ: Reymundo Montenegro Nanez died Sept. 30 at the Las Cruces Memorial Hospital. Mr. Nanez was 58 and a lifelong resident of Grant County. Mr. Nanez served in active duty during World War II in Germany and during this time he was awarded the Victory Medal and the occupation Medal. Mr. Nanez was also a mining inspector for New Mexico until his resignation. He is survived by Lupe McGhee and his children. NANEZ: Ruth Garcia Nanez, 80, a resident of Central, died Friday at Gila Regional Medical Center. She was born Sept. 8, 1915 in Mogollon and had been a lifetime Grant County resident. NANNA: Mrs. Lola E Nanna, 85, passed away at the Fort Bayard Medical Center Saturday after a long illness. Mrs. Nanna was born Sept 28 1900 of John Evans and Myrtle Bradley Evans in Cloudcroft. She is survived by three sons, L C Bookout of Mimbres, Jesse M Bookout of Broomfield, CO and Kenneth D Bookout of Bayard; two daughters, Lois Neal of CA and Gaylene Moss of Clayton; and two brothers, John I Evans of Alamogordo and Jesse J Evans of Ruidoso downs. She was a member of the Assembly of God church of Alamogordo and Bayard and the senior citizens of Alamogordo. Funeral services will be held at the Hamilton Funeral home of Alamogordo. NANNA: William J. Nanna, 66, passed away Tuesday at his home in Bayard. He had retired only recently, having been employed by Kennecott Copper Corp. for the past 17 years. Surviving is his wife, Mrs. Lola E Nanna; a son, Buddy Nanna, Durango, Colo., Three stepsons, Kenneth Bookout, Silver City; Marlin and Clifton Bookout, Bayard and a step-daughter, Mrs. Lois Neal, Roswell. NARD: Claude Nard, 65, a retired engineer of the Chino mines and a veteran of WW I died this past week at Fort Bayard Veterans hospital. In recent years he had resided in Lordsburg. NARVAEZ: Joseph R. (Joe) Narvaez, 51, died Monday morning in an automobile accident. Mr. Narvaez was born in Deming and had been a resident of Silver City for several years. He was a communicant of the Saint Francis Newman Center and was the owner and operator of Copper Hills Datsun in Silver City; was president of the New Car Dealer Association; was a member of the Copper rest Country Club ; was a member of the Silver City Golf Association; was a member of the Western New Mexico University Booster Club: was active in Silver High School activities; was a member of the Bowling Association ; was a member of the Silver City Chamber of commerce; and was a member of the New Mexico Automobile Dealers Association. Mr. Narvaez is survived by his wife, Lilia Narvaez of Silver City; one daughter, Lilia M. Narvaez of Silver City; three sons, Joseph F. Narvaez Jr., Edward B. Narvaez and Robert Narvaez, all of Silver City; one sister, Katherine Sedillo of San Diego, Calif., four brothers, Arthur Narvaez. of Las Cruces, Juvenel Narvaez of Oklahoma City, Okla., Bob Narvaez of Las Cruces and Patrick Narvaez of San Diego. He was preceded in death by one son, Michael Narvaez, on April 9, 1979. NARVAIZ: Alice Saenz Narvaiz passed away Thursday, July 27 at University Hospital in Las Vegas, Nev. She was born in Santa Rita on May 23, 1935. She was the eldest daughter of David and Mary Saenz of Bayard. She had two sisters, Estella Alvarez of Hurley and Ruth Teran of Bayard. She married John Narvaiz of Albuquerque in 1958 and moved to Las Vegas, where she resided until her death. She is survived by her husband, John Narvaiz; a son, John David Narvaiz; three daughters, Lysa Clark, Diedra McDonough and Genevive Narvaiz; and two grandsons, Edward and Daniel Clark. She was employed as a secretary for St. James Catholic Church in Las Vegas. The Rev. Michael Blackburn officiated.

NASH: Alvin Erwin Nash, 50, passed away Wednesday, March 8, 1978, at his residence in Silver City. Mr. Nash was a native of Oklahoma, formerly of Moab, Utah, was employed by U.V. Industries Inc. at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Nash of Silver City, a daughter, Miss Yvonne Nash of Moab, Utah, and three sons, Staff Sgt. Alvin E. Nash, III, stationed in Hawaii, Terry Nash and James Nash, both of Moab, Utah, and four grandchildren. Survivors also include his mother, Mrs. Lottie Lovell of St. Paul, Minn., two sisters, Mrs. Alverda Bossell and Mrs. Julianne Schmidt, both of Cottage Grove, Minn., and a brother, Joe Miles of Billings, Mont. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 15, in the Curtis-Bright Funeral Chapel with the Silver City Elks Lodge conducting services. Interment followed in Ft. Bayard National Cemetery. Officers of the Silver City Elks Lodge served as pallbearers.

NASH: George Alfred Nash, 83, died Friday in the Fort Bayard Medical Center. He was a retired iron worker. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapels.

NASH: Kenneth R. Nash, 61, a former Silver City resident, died April 12 at his home in Loveland, Colo. He was born March 30, 1934 in Gunnison, Colo., the son of Raymond and Thelma Nash. He married Mary Margaret Merris on May 20, 1954. Mr. Nash worked in maintenance most of his life. He enjoyed fishing, camping, woodworking and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Steven Ray Nash and his wife, Nancy of Alamosa, Colo.; two daughters, Stacy Clair Madrid and her husband, Presley of Laredo, Texas, and Kathy Mae Bordewyk and her husband, Dale of Fort Collins, Colo.; his fiancée, Lana Knouse of Loveland; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary M. Nash; and a son, a brother and a sister. A memorial service will be held Monday morning at 10:30 in Allnutt Hunter Chapel of Gateway Baptist Church in Loveland. Memorials may be sent to the March of Dimes in care of Allnutt Hunter Chapel.

NAUGHTEN: The Rev. Gabriel J. Naughten, founder of St. Francis of Assisi Newman Center at Western New Mexico University, died Wednesday in El Paso, Texas. He was 77. He completed his theological studies at Holy Name College and Franciscan Seminary at Catholic University, both in Washington D.C. Naughten volunteered to serve as a Navy chaplain at the start of World War ll. He served as a chaplain for the next 20 years and after retiring from the Navy in 1963, he established the Newman Center. He was pastor of Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church in El Paso for 18 years, later celebrating weekend Masses at St. Pius X and St. Raphael churches in El Paso. He is survived by his brother, Francis Naughten, and his sisters, Mrs. James O'Hearn, Mrs. Joseph Weldon and Mrs. James Sohngen. Rosary was recited at Our Lady of Assumption Thursday at 7 p.m. Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at 8:30 this morning in the same church. Services were conducted by Bishop Reymundo Pena of the Diocese of El Paso. The bishop will accompany the body to Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C. for interment.

NAVA: Funeral services were held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Lordsburg last Thursday for Mrs. Petra B. Nava, native of Georgetown, who died at a local hospital March 25. Mrs. Nava was born at Georgetown April 29, 1887. Burial was made in the Shakespeare Cemetery.

NAVARRETE: Juan Navarrete, 57, formerly of Silver City, died Sunday, May 23, in West Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Olga, of l the home, and three sons, Juan Jose, Daniel and J Michael, all of West Virginia. NEVAREZ: Jose 0. Nevarez, 76, died at Hillcrest Hospital Friday, May 6, following an extended illness. Mr. Nevarez was born in Tepehuanes, Mexico an4 had been living in Giant County for the past 45 years. He was retired from Asarco Mining following 25 years of employment with them. Mr. Nevarez is survived by his wife, Mrs. Concha 1. Nevarez of Bayard, six sons, Mike of Los Angeles, Calif., Pete of San Jose, Calif., Jose and Rodrigo, both of Bayard, Ralph of Sacramento, Calif. and Ernest of Pico Rivero, CA; ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. Rosary services were recited Monday, May 9 at the Curtis-Bright Funeral Chapel with the Funeral Mass being said Tuesday, May 10, at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Bayard. NAYLOR: George William Naylor, 70, of Silver City died Wednesday night at his home. He was born Dec. 4, 1924 in Wasco, Calif. and had been a Grant County resident for the past four years. Mr. Naylor retired from General Foods as a machine mechanic. During World War II, he served with the Army Air Corps as a second lieutenant and was co-pilot on B-17 aircraft. Locally, Mr. Naylor was a member of the Widowed Persons Service. Cremation will take place at Baca's Mimbres Crematorium and as per his request, no services are planned. Survivors include a brother, Donald Clarence Naylor of Modesto, Calif., and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Vienna Jean Naylor in 1986. NEAL: Final rites for Mrs. Annie R. Neal, 76, who succumbed at her Silver City residence, Friday, Feb. 5, were held Monday at Cox Mortuary chapel. Interment was held at Pinos Altos cemetery. The deceased had been a resident of the community for the past 26 years. Survivors include a son, Tracy Neal, Silver City; a daughter, Gladys Parks, Sandwich, Ill., one brother and three sisters.

NEAL: Marcellus W. Neal, well known Albuquerque hotel manager and at one time served as manager of the Murray Hotel, died recently after a brief illness. He had many friends in Silver City. Neal served in World War II with the 18th Airborne Corps as chief clerk to Gen. Matthew B. Ridgeway, He was a member of the VFW the Kiwanis International Club and the Trinity Methodist Church. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Waunita Neal of Albuquerque; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Neal, and a sister, Mrs. Eldamae Akridge, of Temple, Tex.

NEAL: Mary B. Neal, 82, a six-year resident of Lordsburg, passed away Thursday at Sunshine Haven Nursing Home in Lordsburg. Mrs. Neal was born Sept 23, 1910, in Paris, Ill. She lived in Central for 32 years before moving to Lordsburg, where she resided for the past six years. She is survived by two sons, Frank Neal of Peoria, Ariz., and Tracy Keith Neal Jr. of Benson, Ariz.; a daughter, Shirley Ilene Hawthorne of Cranbury, N.J.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. NEAL: Meredith L. Neal, 65, a longtime Silver City resident, entered eternal rest Tuesday at the Veterans' Administration Medical Center in Albuquerque. Pastor Robert Bellows, assisted by the Rev. David Goble, will officiate. Interment will follow at Memory Lane Cemetery in Silver City. He was born Sept. 6, 1928 in Lawton, Okla. Mr. Neal was a veteran of the U.S. Marines, serving during the Korean War. He was a Silver City resident since 1954, having previously lived in Hatch. He married Bobbie J. Ball on July 3, 1956, in Silver City. His life centered around music as he led the Meredith Neal and Bootheel Boys band for 30 years. Mr. Neal had worked for Phelps Dodge and was a member of the White Signal Community Center. For the last several years, he was the office manager of Neal Real Estate. NEAL-BERGLUND: Norma Joan Neal-Berglund, 59, a resident of Silver City, entered life eternal Wednesday. She was born Feb. 15, 1933, in Plainfield, N.J. She was director of admissions and records at Cochise College Douglas, Ariz., and a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Silver City. Mrs. Neal-Berglund was appointed lay Eucharistic minister, and was captain of the New Mexico State Defense Force. She was a member of the Association of Academic Affairs Administrators, and was a scuba diver. The funeral rite will be held Saturday morning at 10 at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. The committal service will follow at Memory Lane Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest. The Rev. Jim Wilson will officiate. NEBLETT: Mrs. Leona Walton Neblett, who was born and reared in Silver City, died the past week at her home in Los Angeles, where she had resided for many years. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Walton. Mrs. Neblett was a talented violinist and presented concerts in Silver City and New Mexico before going to Los Angeles where she continued her concert appearances and also was a violin teacher. She was the sister of Eda Lou Walton, a former member of the faculty of New York University, and William B. Walton, Jr., residing in San Francisco. NEELEY: Donald Terrell Neeley, 39, of Hesperia, Calif., son of James and Kathleen Neeley of Silver City, passed away Monday from injuries he sustained in an automobile accident. He was a dry-waller. Survivors are his parents, James and Kathleen Neeley of Silver City; one brother, Jimmy Neeley of Ruidoso; five aunts, Ann Morgan of Colorado City, Texas, Pauline Williams and Lillian Cox, both of Reserve, Faye Wofford of Conway, Ark., and Mary Dell Phillips of Pine Bluff, Ark., and two uncles, Bob Neeley of Stephen, Ark., and Earl Terrell of Texarkana, Ark. Graveside services will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in Memory Lane Cemetery with Mansel Mortensen officiating. Arrangements are by the Curtis-Bright Funeral Home.

NEELY: Mrs. Bryan Neely, sister-in-law of Mrs. O. M. Linn, passed away at her home in Phoenix on Friday, March 15, following a heart attack. Mrs. Neely had suffered several previous attacks. She frequently visited in Silver City and has many friends here. Mrs. Linn was in El Paso when informed of Mrs. Neely's death and went on to Phoenix with her brother, Claude Neely of Jal, and a sister, Mrs. A. J. Duncan of Roscoe, Tex. Another sister of Mrs. Neely’s, Mrs. Guy McBurnett of Dalhart, Tex. flew to phoenix. Funeral services were held in Phoenix Tuesday morning. Mrs. Linn returned to El Paso Wednesday with her brother and Mrs. Duncan who were en route to their homes and will come on to Silver City today.

NEFF: Charles Edward Neff, 67, died Saturday in Glenwood. Neff was born in Hooker, Oklahoma and returned to Glenwood from Amarillo to retire in 1974. He is survived by his wife, Dorothea of Glenwood, a son, Pat of Mullins, Nebraska, a sister, Lona Graham of Boise City, Oklahoma and three grandchildren. Graveside funeral services were held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Glenwood Cemetery with Reverend Leonard Molone officiating. Serving as pallbearers were Pat Neff, Jerry Molone, Arthur Molone and Dale Molone.

NEFFE: Miss Lillian Neffe, 86, born in Silver City and one of the first employee’s of the Mountain States Telephone Company, passed away Sunday at a local clinic, She was widely known in the community and had innumerable friends, During her many years with the Telephone Company she was most efficient in her duties and served with unfailing courtesy. Miss Neff was a member of one of Silver City’s prominent pioneer families. Her father was M. W. Neffe, who died many years ago. He owned and operated one of the first hardware and mine supply firms which had a profitable business with mining companies in Grant County be’ fore the creation of Luna and Hidalgo Counties and also served mining companies in the boom days of Mogollon. The Neffe family was active in the progress and the social life of Silver City. Survivors are a brother, Jim Neffe of San Francisco; two nephews, Dennis Jackson of Phoenix and Marion Neffe of San Francisco; two nieces, Mrs. Isabel Williams of Ontario, Calif., and Mrs. Margie Mc Cutchen of Maxwell. Calif.; two great-nieces, Mrs. Walker Atwell of Chula Vista, Calif., and Mrs. L E. Patterson of Silver City and a great- nephew, Edwin Gusoskey of Silver City. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Curtis Mortuary chapel, the Rev. Clifton M. Henderson of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, conducting the rites. Burial was in Memory Lane Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Walter Wilson, Howard Mann, Carroll Mann, Fred Mrotzek, Ernst Wischmann, Leo Littlefield.

NEGUAL: Juan Negual, 75, resident of 520 South Silver died at his home Feb. 18. He was born in Key West, Fla. and was retired from the New York Transit Authority in Brooklyn, NY prior to moving to Deming in August of 1973. He was a member of the local congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. Funeral services were held Feb. 21 at the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel. Joe Prieto presided and interment followed at Mountain View Cemetery. Survivors include his wife Carmen Negual of Deming; three daughters, Xiomara Negual of Brooklyn, NY, Grace Negual of Deming and Martha Carter of Alamogordo; one brother, Agustin Negual of Brooklyn, NY; four sisters, Eulalia Serna, Rogelia Diaz, Vestina Teague and Lucerna Martinez, all of NY. Pallbearers were Colonius Newton, Henry Perez, Charles Chadborn, Stan Edwards, Keith Edwards and Don Chabra. Arrangements by the Wheeler Mortuary of Deming.

NEILS: Pilot Robert L. Neils, 46, plywood production manager of J. Neils Lumber Co., Libby, Mont., died in the crash of his twin-engine Cessna last Thursday five miles east of Alma near U. S. 180. Federal Aviation Agency investigators went through the wreckage to determine the cause. State Policeman A. L. Mitchell said the victim's wife was first believed also killed but later was found to have not been in the airplane when it crashed. Mitchell said the crash was witnessed by a mine owner, Carter Grover, from another mountain rim about three miles away. The officer said Neils and his wife had flown to Alma because of a business transaction concerning the Bearup silver mine. By prearrangement they were to fly low over the mine and then land at Glenwood, five miles to the south, where someone from the mine was to pick them up. They flew over the mine and landed. After about 30 minutes no one had shown up so Neils decided to go back and flyover the mine again. Mrs. Neils, who said she disliked flying at low altitudes stayed at the Glenwood air strip. Neils flew over the mine twice and on a third pass apparently was caught in a downdraft. He was killed instantly in the crash and the plane was shattered. The body was brought to the Curtis Mortuary in Silver City and sent to Montana for funeral services and burial.

NELSON: Mrs. Alpha Nelson, 71, who had made her home with her sister, Mrs. Eva McAnulty, died Friday at Hillcrest General Hospital. She had been in ill health for an extended time. A native of the Mimbres, Mrs. Nelson was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Entzminger. She received her education at the Normal School here, now Western New Mexico University and was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Funeral services were held the Curtis Mortuary chapel Monday, the Rev. Samuel Thompson conducting the rites. Burial was in Memory Lane Cemetery. Survivors other than Mrs. McAnulty include an uncle, Ben Entzminger of Dayton, Ohio an aunt, Mrs. M. D. Anderson, of Puyallup, WI; and two cousins, Dr. Lyndol Entzminger of Houston, TX, and Joe Entzminger of Bay City, Tex.

NELSON: Anna Marjorie Nelson, 67, died Tuesday in the Fort Bayard Medical Center. She was born Oct. 1, 1921, and grew up in Virden. She had been a resident of Grant County for the last 9 years and was a housewife. Calling hours will be Thursday from 2:30-3p.m. The funeral service will be at 3 p.m. New Mexico time, and 2 p.m. Arizona time, at the Stake Center in Duncan, Ariz., with Bishop Charles Clouse officiating. Interment will follow in the Virden Cemetery. Survivors are her mother, Lovica Jean Gruwell of Virden; two sons, Aerol Card Gruwell of Scenic, S.D., and Jim Gruwell of Silver City; two daughters, Janice G. Clark of Cliff and Sharon G. Hjorth of Oracle, AZ; one brother, Donald Nelson of Virden; and nine grandchildren. Casket bearers will be Aerol Gruwell, Jim Gruwell, Alan Hjorth, Larry Clark, Clay Clark and Donald Nelson. NELSON: Don Nelson, 80, of Farmington, passed away Sunday. He was born Feb. 2, 1908, at Lewiston, Idaho. A graveside service will be held at Fort Bayard National Cemetery on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Survivors are his wife Ruth Nelson of Farmington, a daughter, Willa Jean Tow and her husband, Gary, of Silver City; a granddaughter, Kather Wimmer of El Paso, Texas; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marvel Lockridge of Lewiston and Fern Cleveland of Spokane, Wash.; and a brother, Kenneth Nelson, of Fresno, Calif. Arrangements are with Cope Funeral Chapel of Farmington.

NELSON: Erwin E. "Sam" Nelson, 80, of Silver City passed away Friday, April 2, at his residence. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Bright Funeral Home. The family will have private memorial services. He was born July 29, 1918, in Tyler, Minn., the son of Sam Nelson and Martha Kronke Nelson. Mr. Nelson married Mildred Jensen on May 21, 1947, in Tyler. She preceded him in death. Mr. Nelson is survived by a daughter, Linda Egge, and her husband, Bill, of Silver City; a son, Art Nelson of El Dorado Hills, Calif.; one sister, Doris Sanders of Ostrander, Minn.; and four grandchildren, Emily Egge, Rose Egge and Chloe Egge of Silver City, and Ana Egge of Austin, Texas. Mr. Nelson worked as a carpenter and retired from Santa Ynez Valley Union High School in Santa Ynez, Calif. Bright Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

NELSON: Grant H. Nelson, 62, a longtime resident of New Mexico, died Thursday in Albuquerque. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn M. Nelson; a daughter, Kristie Clevenger; his sons, Kirk Nelson, Kim Nelson, David Nelson and Joel Nelson; 11 grandchildren; three-great-grandchildren; a, bother, Don Nelson; and a sister. Margaret Stoor. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Marvel Nelson; a sister, Beverly Hunsaker; and his children, Quinn and Mary Lou Nelson. Mr. Nelson was born July 28, 1934, in Alexander, Idaho. He received his degree in nursing from Rick’s College in Rexburg, Idaho. He also attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and the University of Texas at El Paso. Mr. Nelson moved with his family to New Mexico in 1964. He lived and worked in several communities, including Las Cruces, Silver City, Belen, Espanola and Clovis. He was hospital administrator in Silver City, Belen, Espanola and Clovis. He was instrumental in the planning and building of Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City and the James W. Carmack Urgent Care Center at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis. Mr. Nelson and his wife, Marilyn, raised purebred Santa Gertrudis cattle for several years and continued to do so after his retirement from Plains Regional Medical Center in November 1995. He was a member of the Mimbres Masonic Lodge, and the Rocky Mountain Santa Gertrudis Association. Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be C.L. Hunter, Roland Sanchez, Kirk Nelson, Kim Nelson, David Nelson and Joel Nelson. Honorary pallbearers will be Samuel D. NELSON: Harry Bennett Nelson, 71, a resident of Grant County since 1957, died Tuesday in Gila Regional Medical Center. Mr. Nelson was born June 27, 1918, in Safford, Ariz., to Arthur and Clara Morris Nelson. He was a cowboy since the age of 15 and as a boy he farmed with his family in Safford. He was employed by Pacific Western Land and Cattle Co. as ranch superintendent for 33 years and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints, Gila Ward. Funeral services will be Saturday morning at 10 in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Gila. Interment will follow in the Cliff-Gila Mesa Cemetery with Rolland Rice presiding. Survivors are his wife, Maxine Nelson of Gila; two sons, Ronald Kent Nelson of Las Cruces and William Bennett Nelson of Gila; two daughters, Shirley Jean Emfinger of Midland, Texas, and Lori Louise Norris of Cliff; two brothers, Gerald Ned Nelson and Calvin Nelson, both of Phoenix; two sisters, Pauline Winsor and Annie Winsor, both of Safford; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. NELSON: Helen Frances Bordon Mayo Nelson, 99, of Silver City died Friday morning at Gila Regional Medical Center. She was born Jan. 7, 1896 in Lithuania, Russia and had been a Grant County resident since 1981, having moved from Nevada. She was a homemaker and in the past had been employed as a housekeeper by several Hollywood movie stars. Locally, she was a member of the Town and Country Garden Club. NELSON: Marilyn M. Nelson, 65, a longtime resident of New Mexico, died Tues- day, Dec. 2, in Brooklyn Center, Minn. Nelson, who was a hospital administrator in Silver City, Belen, Espanola and Clovis. She was a registered nurse and worked in several capacities, including clinical nursing instructor, physician office nurse, and operating room nurse. She is survived by her sons, David of Maple Grove, Minn., Kirk of Silver City, Kim of Boise, Idaho, and Joel of Kennewick, Wash.; a daughter, Kristie Clevenger of Idaho Falls, Idaho, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. NEUDECKER: Carl Ervin Neudecker, 55, entered life eternal in Catron County. A resident of Arenas Valley, he was president of Las Cruces Oil Company Inc., co-owner of Buttermilk's Shamrock Station in Bayard, co-owner of Southwest Copper Shopper, a driver for Neudecker Trucking, and a member of Silver City Lodge No. 413 of the Elks. He was an active member of the Bayard United Methodist Church, and a veteran of the United States Navy. Calling hours will be from noon until 2 p.m. at Baca's Funeral Chapels. NEUDECKER: Elvin Wallace Neudecker 68, passed away Monday, March 14 at Hillcrest Hospital. Mr. Neudecker was a native of Baden, Illinois, and had resided in Silver City for the past 7 years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Melba Neudecker of Bayard, one daughter, Mrs. Delores Brown of Portales, three sons, Carl Neudecker, Earl Neudecker and Randell Neudecker, all of Silver City, 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Survivors also include a sister, Mrs. Irma Bruckner of Belleville, Ill. Funeral services were held Thursday, March 17, at the Bayard United Methodist Church with Rev. Edmund Frankie officiating. NEUDECKER: Melba H. Neudecker, 83, entered life eternal Tuesday, Jan. 27, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal, Kan. She was born July 12, 1914, in rural Highland, Ill., to the late Herman and Ainanda Steiner. She was a homemaker. She was a Liberal resident for 12 years, having gone there from Silver City, where she lived for many years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Liberal. On July 6, 1936, she married Elvin Neudecker in Highland. He preceded her in death on March 14, 1977. She was also preceded in death by her grandson, Kelly Nuckles, on Sept. 5, 1955; her son; Carl Neudecker, on Sept. 9, 1992; and a brother, Orville Steiner, in Highland. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and will be truly missed by all her family and friends. The funeral liturgy was to be held at the United Methodist Church in Liberal at 11 this morning. A graveside service will take place Saturday afternoon at 1 at Memory Lane Cemetery with Pastor Jesse Liles presiding. Mrs. Neudecker is survived by her two daughters Debris Underhill and her husband, De of Ulysses, Kan, and Wendy Neudecker of Liberal; two sons, Earl Neudecker and his wife, Idella, of Silver City, and Randall Neudecker of Liberal; a sister, Laurine Wernle of Highland and a daughter-in-law, Nancy Neudecker-Bruessel, and husband, Mike, of Silver City. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers are Danny Valentine, Daniel Benitez, Donald and Jason Neudecker, Jimmy Valentine and Phil Neil. Honorary pallbearers are her many relatives and friends. NEVAREZ: Eduviges Carrizozo Nevarez, 87, died Saturday in her home in Santa Rita. She was born March 9, 1902 in El Tigre, Sonora, Mexico and had been a resident of this area since 1940. Mrs. Nevarez was a homemaker and was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Hanover. Calling hours will be today from 1-5 p.m. in Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapels. Rosary service will be at 7 this evening in Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church and Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday morning at 10, also in Our Lady of Fatima. Survivors are her two sons, Pete Quevedo of Bayard and Emilio Quevedo of Oxnard, Calif.; three daughters, Elvira Quevedo of Lordsburg, Mercedes Quevedo of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Anita Gomez of Santa Rita; 28 grandchildren; 69 great-grandchildren;14 great-great-grand children; three nieces; and one nephew. She was preceded in death by her husband, Manuel in 1981; by a son, Manuel Quevedo in 1951; by a daughter, Angelita Ortiz in 1962; and by a grandson, Angel Quevedo in 1971. NEVINS: Michael D. Nevins, 29, a longtime Silver City resident, entered eternal rest Thursday. He was born April 29, 1961, in Morenci, Ariz., to Donald and Winifred Nevins, and had resided in the Silver City area since 1967. Mr. Nevins attended the Silver Schools and graduated in 1979. He also attended New Mexico State University, graduating with a degree in chemical engineering. At the time of his death, Mr. Nevins was employed as a computer programmer for the Phelps Dodge Tyrone Branch. Memorial services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Monday in Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapels with the Rev. Jesse Liles conducting the service. Survivors include his parents, Donald and Winifred Nevins of Tyrone; two sisters, Cindy Nelson and her husband, David, of Montgomery, Ill., and Robin Short and her husband, Mike, of Tyrone; and four nephews, Erik and Jared Nelson of Montgomery, and Justin and Jeff Short of Tyrone. NEWBURY: Oscar Lee Newbury, 73, a resident of Silver City since 1979, died Friday morning in Tyrone. He was born March 19, 1915, in Gleeson, Ariz. Mr. Newbury served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired in Nogales, Ariz. in 1959 from the U.S. Custom Service. After his retirement he managed the Park Mediterranean Towne House Condominiums in Phoenix, Ariz. until 1979 when he moved to Silver City. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and Masonic Lodge in Bisbee, Ariz. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in family plot of the Nogales City Cemetery with Masonic services and veteran’s honors accorded by organizations in Nogales. He is survived by his daughter Susie "Stephanie" Gerdes, and her husband Ron from Morenci, Ariz., both formerly of Silver City; one sister, Verna Manterach of Tucson Ariz.; one daughter-in-law , Linda Newbury of Playas; and three grandchildren, Leeann Newbury of Playas and Ronnie and Stephanie Gerdes of Morenci, both formerly of Silver City. He was preceded in death by the wife, Stephanie; by a son Walter Lee Newbury; and his parents, Porter W. Newbury and Mary Y. Newbury. NEWBY: Carolyn May Newby, 48, a resident of Lordsburg, passed away Sunday at Gila Regional Medical Center. She was born Nov 8, 1947, in Rifle Co, the daughter of Earl and Dorothy McGruder. She moved to Lordsburg from Greeley, Co, three months ago. She is survived by her loving husband, Tom Turrentine of Lordsburg; her sons, Jason Newby of Greeley and Justin Newby of Denver; two brothers, Robert McGruder of Rifle and Clayton McGruder of Steamboat Springs Co; two sisters Karen McNeal of Craig, CO and Donna Casey of Rifle; and two grandchildren, Kyli and Mason Newby. NEWBY: Darling C. Newby, 55, of Cliff passed away Friday morning at Gila Regional Medical Center. She was born Sept. 12, 1936, in Alamogordo, to James and Nina Eanes George. Mrs. Newby was a police officer with the Alamogordo Police Department. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and taking care of animals. She is survived by two sons, Jeff Watson of Gila and Ray Skaggs of Cliff; three daughters, Jo Ann Watson and Darlene Allsup, both of Gila, and Tommie Aguirre of Silver City; six sisters, Wanda McDaniels, Terry Hill, Josie Gowen, Norene Flowers, Sue Del Curto and Jackie Burgess, all of New Mexico; and 10 grandchildren. She was predeceased by her mother, Nina George, who passed away in 1975. Memorial services will be held Monday at 5 p.m. at Curtis-Bright Funeral Home. The Rev. Max Kelly will officiate. Arrangements are by Curtis-Bright Funeral Home, Silver City.

NEWCOMB: Clarence Newcomb, linotype operator at the Enterprise, was called to El Paso the first of the week by the death of his brother, Raymond D. Newcomb, last Saturday. He had been a resident of El Paso for the past eight years and was a fireman for the Texas and Pacific railroad. Other survivors include his mother, Mrs. Millie Marshall, El Paso; and two sisters, Mrs. Vernon Cox, Torrance, Calif. and Mrs. Jack Frost, El Paso. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Harding and Orr Funeral Home.

NEWELL: Officer David V. Newell Sr., 47, a lifelong resident of Lordsburg, passed away Monday at Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City. He was born May 15, 1948 to Henry and Elena (Varela) Newell in Lordsburg. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served two stretches in Vietnam. In 1975 he joined the Lordsburg Police Department and devoted the rest of his life to serving and protecting the community as a patrol officer. Police work was his life and the sirens were his music, but to his children he was a loving father. He is survived by a son, David V. Newell Jr. of Albuquerque; six daughters, Donna Newell and her husband, Michael Trujillo of Albuquerque, Denise Newell and her husband, Cesar Valenzuela, also of Albuquerque, Deborah Newell of Lordsburg, Desiree Newell of Albuquerque, and Zarriah Odom and Jessica Odom, both of Lordsburg; his father, Henry Newell Sr. of Lordsburg; his mother, Elena Altamirano of Albuquerque; and four grandchildren, Michael Trujillo Jr., Ohnisha L. Trujillo, Dolorlee Valencia and Cezar Valencia Jr., all of Albuquerque. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon in the Lordsburg Funeral Home chapel with W.L. Sanders officiating. Committal services were to take place today at 2 p.m. at Shakespeare cemetery with military honors accorded by the New Mexico National Guard. Family members selected Lordsburg Funeral Home to serve them.

NEWELL: Mrs. LaVonne R. Newell, 53, died here Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Newell had been a resident of Bayard for the past 23 years. She is survived by her husband, Oliver S., of Bayard; one daughter, Mrs. Gayle Ruth Lupton, Portland Ore., a son, David 0. Hermosa Beach. Calif.: and 3 grandchildren. Mrs. Newell was a member of the Episcopal Church of The Good Shepherd, the Santa Anna’s Guild of the Church of the Good Shepherd, the Evergreen Garden Club and the auxiliary of A. M. I.E. Funeral services were held in the Episcopal Church of The Good Shepherd Saturday at 4 p.m., with the Rev. C. M. Henderson officiating. Cremation and burial services in San Antonio, Texas followed the services. The family requested that memorial contributions be made to the Church of The Good Shepherd. Casket bearers were: David 0. Newell, Alfred J. Hlauatsch, Alfred G. Hlauatsch, Robert F. Bonner, Max J. Breitenbach and C. P. Glover.

NEWELL: Mrs. Lora Newell, 91, pioneer resident of Silver City, passed away last Friday in a rest home in Los Angeles where she had lived in recent years. During more than 50 years of residence in Silver City, Mrs. Newell for many years operated the early-day Broadway Hotel, located on the present site of the Murray Hotel. When the Broadway hotel closed some years ago, Mrs. Newell opened a large dinning room at her home on North Texas Street, which for many years was weekly luncheon headquarters for the Rotary and Lions Club and other organizations. She also catered to civic banquets and parties and was well known for her fine cuisine. Mrs. Newell was a widow of Link Newell who died in 1909. Surviving is a sister, Mrs. Rees F. Herndon, Sr. of Las Angeles. Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Cox Mortuary Chapel, Rev. C.M. Henderson, of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, conducting the rites. The Silver City Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star held ritualistic committal, followed by interment in the Silver City cemetery. Affectionately regarded as the mother of Rotarians, members of this Service Club were pallbearers, namely, Vernon Glenn, Earl Michaelson, Clyde E. Ely, Frank Parrish, Frank Light and Ira L. Wright.

NEWELL: Manuel Acosta Newell Sr., 73, a resident of Bowie, Ariz., and former resident of Lordsburg, died Sunday in Tucson, Ariz. The prayer vigil (rosary) will begin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and the funeral liturgy will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Lordsburg. NEWELL: Ramon Antonio Newell, 52 a 30-year resident of Tucson. Ariz., passed away Sunday. He was born Dec. 28, 1943, in Lordsburg. Mr. Newell retired from the University of Arizona as a landscaper. He is survived by his daughters, Patricia (Michael) Perez and Angie (David) Elenes; his sons, Ramon Antonio, Randy (Corina) and Andy Newell; and his grandchildren, Michael James, Amanda, Nathan, Fabian and Ramona. A prayer vigil will be held at 7 p.m. today at St. Joseph's Church in Lordsburg. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's. Internment will follow at Shakespeare Cemetery. NEWKIRK: Paul A: Newkirk, for many years employed at Fort Bayard Veterans hospital, died Sunday at the hospital, following a sudden attack of illness. Mr. Newkirk came to Silver City in 1922 for his health and the following year took up work as a clerk in the receiving office at the Veteran hospital, and later worked in the supply department. He was retired in 1936. The deceased was born July 9 1899, at Camden, N. J. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Geraldine Newkirk, employed at Fort Bayard; two sisters, Mrs. A. L. Edwards, El Paso and Miss Helen Newkirk, Philadelphia, and a brother, John L. Newkirk, New York City. Rosary services were held at 7:30 p. m. Tuesday at the Cox Mortuary, followed by funeral services Wednesday morning at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic church, conducted by the Rev. Fr. William E. Guinevan, post chaplain at Fort Bayard. Burial was in the Catholic cemetery. Pallbearers were Alva C. Toney, Harry Aithaus; John Dzurek, Frank Carmella, Frank Torpey, Thomas Foy, Jr.

NEWMAN: Barbara J. Newman, 62, of Deming died Tuesday at the Silver City Care Center. A memorial service will be held later at Fort Logan, Colo. She was cremated under direction of Baca's Funeral Chapel. Survivors include her husband, Donald Newman of Deming; a son Joe Newman of Arkansas; two daughters, Margaret Ann McKinsey of Denver, CO and Elisabeth Newman of New York; a sister Patricia of Aurora, Colo.; and seven children.

NEWMAN: Carl L. Newman, 56, Salt Lake City, Utah, suffered a heart attack at Fierro and was pronounced dead on arrival at Hillcrest General Hospital Monday. The deceased had been in this area for the four months, working for the Boyles Brothers Drilling Co. at Fierro. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Viola Newman, of Salt Lake City; two sons, Gerald Webb Newman of the Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Ala., and Leonard Newman who had been here working with his father; one daughter, Mrs. Carol Hall of Salt Lake City; three grandchildren; three brothers and a sister. The Curtis Mortuary transported the remains by plane to Salt Lake City where funeral services will be held, followed by burial.

NEWMAN: Fred Newman, 88, passed away Sunday, September 16, in Hillcrest General Hospital. Mr. Newman was born in Oakland Illinois and had resided in New Mexico for 70 years where he was employed by Kennecott Copper Co. as a purchasing agent, was a Justice of the Peace in Hurley for 15 years and after moving to Silver City in 1936 he entered business as a mine supplier. Mr. Newman was a great lover of the outdoors and mountains, and loved hunting and fishing. At the time Pancho Villa raided Columbus, New Mexico, he was called with Teddy Roosevelt's men to defend our country. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Silver City, recently received his 50 year pin in the Masonic Lodge and was a member of the American Legion having served in France in World War One. Mr. Newman is survived by his wife of 60 years, Madge Waggoner Newman of Silver City, three daughters, Betty Jo Starns, Blanche Cooley and Neva Stepp, ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Graveside services were conducted at Ft. Bayard National Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 19, with Reverend Clifford E. Hutton of the First United Methodist Church of Silver City and the Hurley Masonic Lounge officiating. Honorary pallbearers were, William Poe, John Henry Schadel, Maurice Conner, Jack Hill, Sr., Ollie McCrary, Clark McKinney, Russell Merritt, Otto Prevost, Jess Little and Bob Powe.

NEWTON: Joe Newton, 23, died Thursday afternoon in the Clovis High Plains Hospital following an accident Tuesday. He was born March 10, 1964, in a naval hospital in Japan. He was employed by the maintenance department of the Clovis Schools. In 1980-81 he was offensive back of the year in all-state football; in 1981 he was the Carnation honorable mention prep all-American football squad member; in that same year he was the Kodak all-American; during that same year he was on the Amarillo Globe News Texas super team; and in 1982 he was the South all-star quarterback. He graduated in1982 from Clovis High School and in 1983 he attended Eastern New Mexico University and was a member of the all-academic football team at the university. He transferred to Western New Mexico University in the fall of 1984 and in 1985 he was special team’s captain, special team’s player of the year, and received the Stallion Club award when the Mustangs played Cameron, Okla., Western State in Colorado, and Colorado School of Mines. He also earned the Hardest Working Mustang Award. He graduated from Western in 1986 with a degree in business. That same year he was the backfield coach for the Mustangs. Survivors are his parents; Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Newton of Clovis; one brother, William, of Silver City; and one sister, Debbie, of Clovis. Pallbearers will be Mark Sanchez, Terry Damron, Dale Fullerton, Ollie Hall, Pat Dixon and Eric Roanhaus. Services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Central Baptist Church in Clovis with the Rev. Royce Denton and the Rev. David Swann officiating. Burial will be in Lawn Haven in Clovis. NEWMAN: Rosella Madge Waggoner Newman, 83, passed away Friday at Homestead Rest Home to Silver City. Mrs. Newman had been a resident of Silver City for 63 years. She was a member of the First Methodist Church and the Hurley order of The Eastern Star. She is survived by three daughters, Neva Stepp, Blanche Cooley, of Silver City and Betty Jo Starnes of Deming. Graveside services were held today at 10am at the Fort Bayard National cemetery with the Rev. Henderson officiating. Arrangements are with the Curtis-Bright.

NEWTON: Susie Wilson Newton, 74, of Pinos Altos died at the Ft. Bayard Medical Center. She was born February 9, 1910, in Eufaula, OK, the daughter of Henry P. and Martha Chapman Wilson. Mrs. Newton was a member of the Baptist Church. Survivors include three daughters, Bettye Branch of Silver City, Doris Egge of Salinas, Calif. and Yvonne Cripe of Tucson, AZ; a son, Wayne Newton of Peabody, Mass; two sisters, Marie Story of Oklahoma City, Ok. and Addie Smith of Oakland, Calif; one brother, William Wilson of Oroville, Calif; eight grandchildren and three great- grandchildren. Graveside services were held at the Arvin District Cemetery in Arvin, Calif. under the direction of the J. W. Sams and Sons Mortuary. Local arrangements were by the Curtis-Bright Funeral Home.

NEZ: Christopher Donald Nez, 26, died Saturday in Fort Bayard. He was born August 2, 1962, in Silver City and was a lifelong resident. He was employed as a heavy equipment operator. Funeral services will be Thursday morning at 10 at Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapels with interment to follow in the Fort Bayard state cemetery. NEZ: Mary Francis Nez, 61, of Vanadium passed away Friday at Gila Regional Medical Center. She was born in Naschitti, N.M., April 12, 1936, to Shorty and Fannie Begay. She married her husband, Haya Nez, in October 1954 and was a longtime resident of the Grant County area, retiring from Fort Bayard Medical Center after 25 years of service. She was preceded in death by her mother, Fannie, and a son, Christopher D. Nez. Survivors include her father, Shorty, of Naschjttj; her husband, Haya Nez of Vanadium; a son, David Nez of Vanadium; her daughter, Cynthia L. Nez of Bayard; her brothers, James S. Begay of Navajo, James E. Begay of Bayard, and Thomas S. Begay of Naschitti and her sisters, Evelyn Sam of Naschitti and Joann B. Herbert of Santa Clara. Visitation will be Wednesday at Baca’s Funeral Chapels from noon until 2 p.m. The funeral service will begin at 2 pm Wednesday at Baca’s, with Deacon Johnnie Perez officiating. NICHOLAS: Kenneth James Nicholas, 19, of Playas, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 3, at his home. Funeral services will be conducted at 4:30 this afternoon at the Community Center in Playas with the Rev. Ron Cross officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Bisbee, Ariz., Saturday at noon (Arizona time). Mr. Nicholas was born May 12, 1980, in Tucson, Ariz., the son of Mark Albert Nicholas and Hazel Susan Walters Nicholas. He is survived by his parents; grandparents, Bill and Barbara Nicholas of Wichita, Kan.; two uncles, Bill Nicholas and his wife, Marilyn, and Dennis Nicholas, all of Tucson; two cousins; and many friends in the community. "Kenny was a young man who touched many lives in many ways. His warm smile reached many people even if it was only in passing. Although faced with obstacles of life, he faced every one of them with strength and courage that many of us don't know and may never know. He completed every challenge that was given to him. NICHOLS: B.W. Nichols, 62, of Silver City, passed away Friday morning at his home, He was born in Long Beach, Calif., and was a graduate of Missouri School of Mines with a degree in mining engineering. He was a World War II veteran. Mr. Nichols is survived by his wife, Joanne of Silver City; a son, Scott of Silver City; a daughter, Kristine of El Paso; two grandchildren, Jason and Kirsten of El Paso; and his mother, Cleo of Baxter Springs, Kans. He will be buried on Monday at 3 p.m. at Memory Lane Cemetery. There will be graveside services only. In lieu of flowers friends may make a donation to the American Cancer Society. NICHOLES: Mrs. John Nicholes, 75, past away this week at the home of her son, Charles Nicholes, in Bayard, where she had resided for more than a year. She formally lived in Bisbee, Ariz. Funeral services were held in Bisbee, where burial took place.

NICHOLLS: Walter Scott Nicholls 66, a farmer of La Luz, Otero County was taken ill while visiting a daughter at Lordsburg was brought to Silver City for treatment in the hospital where he died Tuesday morning. Funeral services were held at the Cox Mortuary Chapel Wednesday at 2 p. m. and the body, accompanied by members of the family, was taken to Alamogordo, for burial. Rites here were conducted by the Rev. W. Akins, Baptist minister. Surviving are his wife, nine daughters, one son, four sisters, a brother, and 28 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
NICHOLS: Luke E. Nichols, 85, a resident of Pinos Altos for the past 35 years, died in Hillcrest Hospital March 29. He was a retired Kennecott employee. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Minnie M. Nichols of Pinos Altos; one daughter, Mrs. Edith Lee of Terre Haute, Ind., four grandchildren; and one brother, John Nichols of Roanoke, Va. Funeral services were held in the Curtis-Bright Funeral Chapel at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Alfred Pace of the First United Methodist Church officiated. Interment followed in Memory Lane Cemetery. NICHOLS: Walter B. Nichols, 69, of Silver City passed away Wednesday, June 3, at Fort Bayard Medical Center. Memorial services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Southwest Horseman’s Arena in Silver City with Stephen Harper officiating. Mr. Nichols was born June 14, 1928, in Grand Canyon, Ariz., the son of Jim Nichols and Jessie Gillam Nichols. Mr. Nichols is survived by one daughter, Alma Faye Wilson, and her husband, Monty, of Pinos Altos; a son, Rex Nichols, and his wife, Linda, of Silver City; three grandchildren, Kelly Sturdevant and her husband, Chris, of Pinos Altos, Kevin McCauley and his wife, Vicky, of Silver City, and Ginger Nichols and companion, Trey Francione, of Benson, Ariz.; two great-grandchildren, Chase Sturdevant and Taylor McCauley of Silver City; four brothers, Jimmy Nichols of Willow Park, Texas, and the San Diego area, and Johnny Nichols, Charlie Nichols and Billy Nichols, all of San Diego; and two sisters, Frances Walton and Jeanne Flowers, both of San Diego. Also surviving is the staff at Fort Bayard Medical Center, who not only provided health care, but became a part of his life. Mr. Nichols loved to rodeo and won many saddles and buckles, and other recognition as great, cowboy. He was very successful in competition in Madison Square Garden, Boston Gardens, Prescott Frontier Days and the Cheyenne Rodeo, and man other places He was an all roping, team roping, steer roping and bull riding, and other events. Honorary bearers will be Smokey Mahoney, Howard Daniels, Bill Hill, Gene Ray Ward, L.G. May, Clint Jacobs and Benny Jacobs. Donations may he made to the Walt Nichols Memorial Scholarship Fund at Nations Bank.

NICHOLSON: Malcolm Kenneth Nicholson, 70, of Hurley, died recently in Garland, TX. He was born June 11, 1914 in Marble Falls, TX, the son of William and Lilly Gadburn Nicholson and had been a resident of Hurley for the past 45 years having come to Grant County from Clarksdale, AZ, where he was employed by Phelps Dodge. Upon his arrival here in 1939 he began working at the Smelter in Hurley, which had just opened, retiring in 1976 from Kennecott Copper Corp. as a Converter General Foreman. Mr. Nicholson was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bayard and the Grant County Sheriff's Posse. Survivors include his wife, Wilma McCarty Nicholson, whom he married Oct. 7, 1937; four daughters, Maxine Nicholson of Garland, TX, Barbara Choate of Washington, D.C., Sharleen Maese of El Paso, TX and Betty Marriage of Hurley; four sisters, Ramona Crosby of Cottage Grove, Or, Obe Sherman of Torrance, CA, Bernice Sloper of Quincey, CA and May Brown of Baldwin Park, CA. A memorial service was held under the direction of Bill Miller, Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Bayard. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Cancer Society, Grant County Unit.

NICHOLSON: Wilma D. Nicholson, 87, of Hurley passed away Monday, Dec. 21, in Houston. Mrs. Nicholson was born July 13, 1912, in Pauls Valley, Okla., the daughter of Robert McCarty and Bertha Ethridge McCarty. Mrs. Nicholson married Malcolm Kenneth Nicholson on Oct. 12, 1937, in Kingman, Ariz. Mrs. Nicholson is survived by four daughters, Maxine Nicholson of Houston, Barbara Choate and her husband, Richard, of Hurley, Sharleen Maese of El Paso, Texas, and Betty Marriage and her husband, Floyd, of White Signal; seven grandchildren, Rich Choate of Las Cruces, Nicole Hickle and her husband, Frank, of Silver City, Shawna Rowland of Hurley, Roger and Patrick Maese of El Paso, and Rasnona and Luke Marriage of White Signal; two great-grandchildren, Alex and Sydney Rowland of Hurley; one brother, James McCarty, and wife, Dorothy, of Coos Bay, Ore.; two sisters, Wynona Reed of Crescent City, Calif., and Leala Jones and husband, Buford, of Alamogordo; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Nicholson was preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm, in 1984, and her grandson, Christopher Spangler, in 1996. She moved to Hurley in 1939 with her husband when the smelter started operations, and remained and raised a family. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, who will remember her generosity and her love of life. A memorial service s planned for a later date. NICKEL: Dade R. Nickel, 71, of Ventura, Calif., died Friday in Ventura after a long illness. He was a former resident of Silver City. He was born in Magdalena and educated in Silver City. He was a graduate of New Mexico State Teachers College. Mr. Nickel taught in Ventura and retired in 1984. Survivors are his wife, Jean Nickel, a daughter, Nikki Nickel Downing, and a son, Gary Nickel, all of Ventura. Cremation is planned. No services will be held.

NICKEL: Mrs. Grace Nickel passed away Thursday in Albuquerque at the age of 75. She was the daughter of Felix and Mae (Lusk) Willowick. She married Frank Nickel in 1953. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1974 and her mother in 1975. Mrs. Nickel came to Silver City in 1944 and taught at the high school in Silver City until her retirement in 1978. She will long be remembered by her many students and friends as an outstanding educator and historian, for her inspiring book reports, and for her many volunteer efforts. She served on the school board for the Silver Schools and held many offices in the Silver City Woman's Club. She was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, The Silver City Woman's Club, Phi Beta Kappa, Delta Kappa Gamma, Phi Kappa Phi, the National Education Association, the American Association of Retired Persons, the Friends of the Library and the Gardenettes. Memorial gifts can be given in her name to the Silver City Public Library. Services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. Interment will follow at Memory Lane Cemetery. Arrangements are by Curtis-Bright Funeral Home of Silver City.

NICKS: Arthur A. Nicks, 70, a veteran of World War I and a resident of Gila for the past year, died Sunday at the Fort Bayard Veterans Hospital He was born in Longmont, Colo., where for many years he was active in the wholesale produce business. Surviving is his widow, Mrs. Rae Nicks; a son, William, serving in the U. S. Army in Germany, and a daughter, Patricia Aim of Gila. NICOLAI: Death at Hot Springs last Thursday claimed Charles Nicolai, for years employed by the Empire Zinc Company at Hanover. He was well known and respected throughout the district where he had lived and worked so many years. He is survived by his widow, and two sons, William and Frank, Hanover; four daughters, Josephine, Mrs. Cecilia Torres and Mrs. Manuel Duran, Hanover; Mrs. Ernest Portillo, Sliver City, and a step-brother, William Anthony, Tucson, AZ who attend the funeral. Mr. Nicolai was life-long resident of Grant County being born at Georgetown Oct 26, 1879 when that camp, now a ghost town, was a bonanza silver producer. Funeral services were held Saturday at Hanover. There was mass at 9 a.m. in the Catholic church conducted by the Rev. Pedro Ruiz with services at 3 p. m. interment was in the Hanover cemetery directed by the Cox Mortuary.

NICOLAS: Robert Nicolas passed away April 21 in Silver City. He was 52 and had lived in Silver City for a number of years. His body was taken to the Garden of Memories in El Paso for cremation. Wheeler Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

NIETO: Andrea L. Nieto, 94, former resident of Las Cruces, died Friday at Fort Bayard Medical Center. Mrs. Nieto was a member of the Baptist Church. She was a homemaker. She is survived by two daughters, Cecilia Lucero and Andrea L. Nieto, both of Las Cruces; a son, Joe L. Nieto of Las Cruces; one nephew; four nieces; a granddaughter; and three great-grandchildren. Graveside funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Fort Bayard state cemetery. Arrangements are by Wheeler Funeral Home.

NIMS: The Rev. Fred Arthur Nims Sr. passed away Wednesday, Jan. 7 at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces. A memorial service will be held at a later date with the Rev. Johnny Roberts officiating. The Rev. Nims liked to hunt, fish, scuba dive and race cars, but most of all he loved to fly airplanes. He was a pilot for many years. He was in the Air Force and was an instructor in World War II. His other love was pastoring for the Lord and being with his family. The Rev. Nims pastored up until a year ago when he became ill. He was a member of Alpha Baptist Church in Deming. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Virginia Bandy Nims of Deming; his children, Lynette Spencer, Nick Nims and Mike Brusenhan, and of Fort Worth Texas, Kelly Brusenhan of Kodiak, Alaska, and Molly Hale of Brownfield, Texas; one sister, Betty Johnston of Kansas City; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Bright Funeral Home has charge.

NIPPA: Cameron C. Nippa, 36, resident of Santa Rita and a Ford salesman, was instantly killed sometime early this morning when his car overturned several times on Route 260 just west of Central. Nippa's car and his body were discovered by a passing motorist just before daylight and the accident reported to chief of police J. C. Summers in Silver City. No reason is known for the accident.

NIX: Mrs. Etta A. Nix, 82, of Santa Rita, a resident of Grant County for 51 years, died Tuesday. Surviving are her husband, John F. Nix; a son, J. A. Nix, of Phoenix one grandchild and three great grandchildren; a brother and two sisters. Funeral arrangements are pending at the Curtis Mortuary.

NIX: John F Nix, 93, of Bayard, a retired security guard for Chino Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corp., died last Saturday in Hillcrest Hospital. He had made his home in Santa Rita since 1910, and for many years served as a security guard for Chino Mines Division, Kennecott Corp., where he had an excellent record, retiring many years ago. The deceased was one of Chino’s oldest retired employees. Funeral services were held Monday at the Curtis Mortuary chapel, the Rev. Kenneth F. Ford of the First Methodist Church, conducting the rites. A member of Santa Rita Lodge of Masons, he was the oldest member. Graveside services were by the Masons with entombment in the mausoleum at the cemetery. Survivors are a son, John A. Nix, of Phoenix, Ariz., who attended the funeral. Other survivors are a grandchild and three great grandchildren.

NIX: Lloyd A. Nix, 81, a resident of Silver City passed away Wednesday. He was born July 8, 1914, in Durant, OK, to Jim and Lou Nix. He worked most of his life as an auto mechanic. He came to this area five years ago from El Paso, Texas. He is survived by three sons, Ernest L. Nix, Ronald L. Nix and his wife, Carol, of Alamogordo, and Roy L. Nix and his wife, Dolores, of Silver City; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Faye Nix, in 1989. Cremation has taken place with Baca's Mimbres Crematory. A memorial will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Baca's Funeral Chapels. Burial of cremains will take place at a later date in Texas. NIX: Whitney Erin Nix, 2, died Monday in Silver City. She was born in El Paso, Texas, and had been a Grant County resident for eight months. She is survived by her parents, Ernest and Lisa Nix; one sister, Melissa Nix; and one brother, David Nix, all of Silver City; paternal grandparents, Ernest and Cynthia Nix of El Paso; and her maternal grandparents, Dean and Sharon Tolstedt of Truth or Consequences. Services will be held at 10 a.m.
Wednesday in the Latter-day Saints Church in Silver City. Interment will follow in the Memory Lane Cemetery with Bishop Gary Stailey officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Darren Nix, Lonnie Bentley, Lloyd Nix and Ernest Nix Sr. Honorary pallbearer will be Richard Dean Tolstedt. Arrangements are by the Wheeler Funeral Home.

NIXON: Loice Henderson Nixon, 83, died Thursday in the Fort Bayard Medical Center. He was born Aug. 26, 1905, in Linder, Ark., had been a resident of Grant County for the past 25 years, and was a member of the Gila Valley Baptist Church. Mr. Nixon was retired from the Coppercrest Golf Course. Graveside services will be held at a later date in Conway, Ark. Survivors are his wife, Blanche, of the home; two sons, James Nixon of Albuquerque and Larry Nixon of Silver City; a stepdaughter, Janet McBride of Cliff; a sister, Era Horsky of Greenbriar, Ark.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Local arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapels.

NOBLE: Mrs. Janet Colleen Noble, 24, died May 29. Funeral services were held -----

NOBLE: Funeral services were held March 18 at the Curtis-Bright Funeral Home for Winifred Nobel who died March 16 at Hillcrest General Hospital. The Rev. Alfred C. Pace officiated and interment was at the Masonic Cemetery. Miss Noble, who was born in Silver City, December 11, 1912, was the daughter of Mrs. Winifred Noble of 301 F Street, and the late R.P. Noble. She attended the Silver City public schools, graduating in 1930 from what was then known as Teachers High School. A talented pianist, Miss Noble won the state music career was cut short in 1931 when she was severely injured in an automobile accident while a freshman student at Pomona College in CA. Although confined to a wheelchair since 1931, Miss Noble established a reputation as an astute business woman and maintained an active interest in civic and cultural affairs. She was a life-time member of the First Methodist Church, took a lead role in founding the local historical society, was an early member of the 24 Club, serving at one time as its president, and was a member of the Greatest Books Club. Serving as pall bearers were Sidney Curtis, Norman Hodges, William Word, John Davis, Lewis Vencill, and Samuel Binder.

NOCE: Fausto Noce, 87, of Lordsburg passed away Monday, April 17, at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces. Visitation will be from 1-5 p.m. Friday at Lordsburg Funeral Home. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Interment with military honors will follow at Shakespeare Cemetery. Mr. Noce was born Aug. 16, 1912, in New Town, Ariz., the son of Bias Noce and Elvira Parque Nece. He was married to Frieda Estrada, who preceded him in death. Mr. Noce is survived by one son Fausto Noce Jr., and his wife, Bonnie, of Las Cruces; one daughter, Anthanita M. Borrego, and her husband, Bobby, of Silver City; two brothers, Gene Noce and his wife, Alice, of Lordsburg, and Joe Noce and his wife, Malcina, of Henderson, two sisters, Martha Chapman of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Julia Martin of Phoenix; three nieces, Gloria Fanis, Linda Nava and Betty Gregory; a nephew, David Noce; H four grandchildren, Angelica Noce, Erica Noce and Jessica Noce, all of Las Cruces, and Anthea Borrego of Silver City; and one great-grandson, Isaiah Amado Borrego. Mr. Noce attended Lordsburg High School and graduated m 1931, He attended the University of Southern California under a football scholarship for two years. He enlisted in and served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the Philippines. Mr. Noce was a Bataan Death March survivor. He was a prisoner of war for three and one-half years. He retired in 1946 to work in his father's home- owned business, which i started in 1939 and to this J day is still in operation. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3099, Elks Lodge 1813, and the Lordsburg Lions Club. He J was a commander of the American Legion in Lordsburg and a commander of Prisoners of War of New Mexico. He served as a city councilor for 16 years and as county commissioner for 12 years. Pallbearers will be David Noce, Clifford Martin; Chris Nava, Shannon Farris, Mike Coogan and Gary Corbel. Honorary pallbearers are John Schaber, Robert Saucedo, Kiki Chaires, Mike Gutierrez, Billo Fisher, Herbert Saucedo, Manuel Saucedo, and all his Bataan March comrades: Lordsburg Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

NOLAN: Dr. Blaine Nolan, 59, professor of education at New Mexico Western College, died of a massive coronary Nov. 21 while enroute from Wichita to Winfield, Kan., to spend the Thanksgiving holidays with his two step-daughters, Terry and Jean Kovacevich. Dr. Nolan had flown from Silver City to Wichita, and was on his way to Winfield by car. He suffered the heart attack as the car pulled into a service station. Dr. Nolan came to Silver City and New Mexico Western College in 1957. He earned his Ph.D. In Education at the University of Missouri, and held a Doctor of Law degree from Cornell University. His move to Silver City marked an extensive teaching career at several of the nation’s major universities. He was active in civic and club affairs, holding membership in the Silver City Elks Lodge and as president of the Rotary Club. He was in demand as a speaker on problems of education and community progress. Besides his step daughters, Dr. Nolan is survived by a sister, Mrs. Wayne Sefton of Pasadena, Calif. Funeral services were held in the Episcopal Church in Winfield, with burial following in the family plot at Pittsburg, Kan. New Mexico Western College will sponsor a memorial fund for Dr. Nolan for the purchase of books, in his name, for the college library. Dr. John Snedeker, NMWC president, paid tribute to Dr. Nolan, saying, “Our Initial shock has given way to a feeling of tremendous personal loss. He was a dedicated scholar and outstanding teacher.”

NOLING: Clara Etta Stockman Noling, 89, a resident of Lordsburg, passed away Thursday at Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City after a short illness. She was born Jan. 19, 1904, on the Gila River south of Riverside in Grant County, the eldest child in the family of Ira D. Boyd Stockman and Florence Margaret Nichols. The Nichols’s and Stockman’s arrived in Grant County in the spring of 1900 and Mrs. Noling's parents were married in 1901. The family a few years later moved to Tyrone, where her father worked as a deputy sheriff. Mrs. Noling's father died in 1916, and when she was 12 years old, she waited tables in restaurants in Tyrone to help her mother provide for the family. The family subsequently moved to Silver City, where she worked in the old Silver City Hospital. She became a practical nurse and throughout her life, helped the ill and elderly with her nursing skills. She was unable to recount all the babies she delivered as a midwife, particularly for poor families. She married Dennis Elma Noling on April 28, 1919, and they adopted two children, Robert and Virginia Louise. The couple raised their family in Lordsburg. Mr. Noling died June 16, 1974, and Mrs. Noling continued to live in the family home. She was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1957. Mrs. Noling was the Stockman family genealogist for many years, researching the history of her ancestors and preserving the information. After her eyesight failed, she still retained her special interest in her family's history. Mrs. Noling was preceded in death by her son, Robert, her sister, Dorcas Cinderella Whitaker, and her brothers, Clarence William Stockman and James Hardy Stockman. She is survived by her brother, Ira D. Boyd Stockman of Arenas Valley; and her daughter, Virginia Louis Zahn, two granddaughters, Cathy Louella Avery-Graves and Donna Louise Millage, and six great-grandchildren, all of Tucson, Ariz. Visitation will begin at 8:30 Monday morning at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 809 Pyramid St. in Lordsburg. The funeral service will follow at 10. Grant County residents who plan to attend the service should allow extra time for travel due to construction on New Mexico 90. Arrangements are by Curtis-Bright Funeral Home of Silver City.

NORBERTO: In a traffic crash at the eastern city limits last Friday night, Lee Norberto, 22, New Mexico Western College student, was fatally injured, and two other students, Frederick James Peso, 21, and Manuel Molina, 22, were seriously injured. It was Silver City’s first traffic death since March 1959. Silver City police, State Police and Sheriff’s office deputies investigated the accident, which was attributed to excessive speed. The car, driven by Peso, went out of control, hurtled the highway at the Durango Street intersection and plunged into the Pinos Altos Arroyo. Two hitchhikers, William Leroy Washburn, Richmond, Calif., and Dale Robert Merrick, Fairbolt, MN, narrowly escaped being struck by the careening car. The body of Norberto was sent by the Curtis Mortuary to Lynbrook, N. M., for burial. Surviving are his wife and two children. As a result of the accident, an involuntary manslaughter charge was filed against Peso and he was held under $1,000 bond for a preliminary hearing in the court of Justice of the Peace U. L. Conner.

NORDLOH: George Nordloh, 73, well known resident of Hurley, where he had lived for the past 21 years died Monday in a Silver City clinic, following a brief illness. Until his retirement in 1959, He was employed by Chino Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corporation. Prior to coming to New Mexico, Mr. Nordloh was superintendent of the Faurot Oil & Gas Co. of Winfield, Kan., for 20 years Surviving is Mr. Nordloh’s widow, Mrs. Ida Nordloh of Hurley; two sons, Anson Nordloh of Houston, Tex., and Earl Nordloh of San Antonio, Tex.; four grandchildren; two sisters. Mrs. Emma Mitchell and Mrs. Eva Rice of Strawsberg, CO: and two brothers. Victor Nordloh of Deertrail, Conn. and Albert Nordloh of Henderson, Nev. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Curtis Mortuary Chapel, by the Rev. W. C. Dickerson Pastor of the Hurley Community Church. Burial will be in the Masonic Cemetery.

NORDLOH: Ida F. Nordloh, 94, of Converse, Texas, passed away Thursday at her residence. Mrs. Nordloh was born July 5, 1897, in Garber, Okla., to Thomas Jefferson and Lucretia (Alexander) Zediker. She was a member of the Eastern Star and Ladies Aid of Hurley, and was active with the American Association of Retired Persons. She is survived by two sons, Earl Nordloh of San Antonio, Texas, and Anson Nordloh of Houston; and seven grandchildren. Graveside services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Masonic Cemetery. The Rev. Ken Schultz will officiate. Interment will follow. Arrangements are by Curtis-Bright Funeral Home of Silver City.

NORERO: Mrs. Belen C. Norero, 69, died July 24 at her home in Sherman. She was a native of Mexico, and had lived in Sherman for the past 50 years. Mrs. Norero was preceded in death by her husband, Alejandro V. Norero in 1967. She is survived by four sons, Felix and Antonio of Sherman, and Gabriel and Lorenzo of Albuquerque; one daughter, Mrs. Lily Pulsifer of Albuquerque; her mother, Mrs. Epigmenia Correa of Silver City; one brother, Crecencio Correa of Silver City; three sisters, Miss Gabriela Correa and Mrs. Jesusita Jurado of Silver City, and Mrs. Cruz Ybarra of Albuquerque; and seven grandchildren. Funeral Services were held in the Curtis-Bright Funeral Chapel July 26. Burial Mass was celebrated at the San Juan Catholic Church July 27. Interment followed at the Sherman Cemetery. The Rev. Fr. Philip Van Engelen was celebrant.

NORERO: Carlos V. Norero, 80, pioneer resident of the Mimbres area, died the past week. Mass was said at the Sherman Catholic Church Monday and burial took place in the San Juan cemetery under direction of the Curtis Mortuary.

NORERO: A pioneer of the Mimbres and lifelong resident of Grant County, Mrs. Charlie P. Norero, 72, passed away last Friday at Hillcrest General Hospital. In recent years she had lived in Central. She is survived by her husband; two sons, Max of Central and Ysidro, Los Angeles; a daughter, Mrs. Amalia Lucero, Central; a brother, Juan Padilla, Sherman; seven grandchildren and10 great grandchildren. NORERO: Max P. Norero, 89, of Ontario, Calif., died Wednesday at San Antonio Community Hospital in Upland, Calif. A retired heavy-equipment driver for Kennecott Corp., he was a native of Sherman, N.M., and was raised in Central. Mr. Norero had been an Ontario resident for the past 17 years. He is survived by his wife, Faustina Norero, and a son Ed Norero, both of Ontario, and a granddaughter, Adrienne. Visitation will be held at Draper Mortuary in Ontario on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. Catholic vigil services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Draper Memorial Chapel. NORINE: Louis Andrew Norine, 73, passed away Thursday afternoon at his residence west of Reserve. He was a civil engineer and rancher and had lived and worked in Catron County for many years. Mr. Norine was an elder in the Reserve Community Presbyterian Church, and had lately been judged Rancher of the Year in his area. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Kathleen E. Norine of Reserve; two daughters, Mrs. Pat Turner of Silver City and Mrs. Elizabeth Fisher of Reserve; one brother Charles A. Norine of Las Lunas; one sister, Mrs. Carolyn N. Imes of Westminster, CO; one brother, Charles E. Norine of Tuolumne, Calif.; and six grandchildren, Memorial services will be held at a later date at the Community Presbyterian Church. NORRIS: James M. Norris, 81, of Bayard, passed away last Saturday at Hillcrest General Hospital. He had resided in Grant County for 40 years and was a retired employee of the Santa Rita Store Co. at Hurley, of Chino Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corp. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Viola Norris; a son, Byron of Wink, Texas, and two daughters, Mrs. John Fellabaum and Mrs. Effie Byrd, of Hurley; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at the Cox Mortuary chapel Monday at 2 p.m., followed by burial in the Masonic cemetery.

NORRIS: Long time resident of the Gila valley, Mrs. Jean Norris, passed away July 10 in Globe, Arizona. She was preceded in death by her husband Owen in March of this year. Funeral services will be held at the Cliff-Gila Mesa Cemetery Saturday at 1 p.m. Mrs. Norris is survived by one sister, Mildred Brent of Yuma, one brother, Duke Pitts of Riverside, three sons, Don Norris, Silver City, Pinkey Norris, Globe and George Norris, Waverly, Kansas; one daughter, Ruth Byers, Magna, Utah. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

NORRIS: Kelly R Norris, 31, son of Mr. and Mrs. James N. Norris of Cliff, died at his home last Thursday, following many years of illness. Survivors other than his parents, include three brothers. Harold, Ray and Edwin of Cliff, and two sisters, Mrs. Wilma Sneddon of Raytown, MA and Mrs. Fields Welburn of Las Vegas, Nev. Funeral and Interment services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Mesa Cemetery at Gila, with Marvin Fell of the Church of Christ, officiating. Burial was under the direction of Curtis Mortuary. Pallbearers were Tom McCauley, Harpin McCauley, Dale McCauley, Fate McCauley, Don Norris and Howard Norris.

NORRIS: Leola M. Norris, 83, a former Cliff resident, died Friday at Globe, Ariz. Graveside services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Mesa Cemetery in Gila with the Rev. David Goble officiating.

NORRIS: Mrs. Melissa Norris. 93, died last Saturday in Rest Haven nursing Home, where she had been a patient for the past several years. She was a resident of Hurley for 44 years. Survivors are a son, Brian Norris of Sun City, AZ; a daughter, Mrs. John W. Fellabaum of Honey; seven grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, Funeral services were held Tuesday in the chapel of the Curtis Mortuary. Officiating was the Rev. Walter Dickerson of the Hurley Community Church, assisted by the Rev. C. M. Henderson, rector of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd of Silver City. Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery.

NORRIS: Michael William Norris, 16, died Sunday in Battle Mountain, Nev. He was born Aug. 1st, 1972, in Silver City and was a student. Funeral services were held today at 9 a.m. in Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapel and graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. in the Cliff Gila Mesa Cemetery with David Goble and David Norris presiding. Entrusted to the care of Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapels.

NORRIS: Ray Norris, 61, a former Cliff resident, died Thursday as the result of an auto accident near his home in Willcox, Ariz. Graveside funeral services will be held Monday at 5 p.m. in the Cliff-Gila Mesa Cemetery. Mr. Norris was a veteran of the Korean conflict, serving with the United States Marine Corps. He is survived by his wife, Sharon; a son, Paul Ray Norris of Norwood, Colo.; three daughters, Rae Hunt and Nancy Norris, both of Flagstaff, and Patricia Norris of Willcox; two brothers, Harold and James Norris of Cliff; sister, Frieda Wellborn of Las Vegas, Nev.; and two grandchildren. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapels.

NORRIS: Mrs. Thelma (Dolly) Norris, 43, of Pinos Altos died at her home in Pinos Altos last Thursday. She had lived in Grant County for the past 15 years and had a wide circle of friends. Survivors are her husband, Donald Norris, her mother, two brothers and a sister, residing in Marlan, South Carolina. Funeral services were held at the Curtis Mortuary chapel and burial took place in Marlan, S. C.

NORTH: Eugene Benton North , resident of grant County for 39 years and a former Grant County official, died Tuesday evening at 7:30 at Hillcrest General Hospital where he had been a patient for several days. Mr. North, who since his retirement as the Grant county Treasurer last year, has been affiliated with the business office of New Mexico Western College, was stricken several weeks ago and throughout the past several days was in critical condition in the hospital. His death Christmas night occurred at the age of 64. E. B. (Gene) North was born at Labadie, Mo., Sept. 23, 1887. He came to Silver City as a young man and through out his residence here established a reputation throughout the state for his efficiency of accounting and filling systems as Treasurer of Grant County. His method of conducting the business of the treasurer’s office was adopted in many counties throughout the state and upon occasions of conventions of county officials, he was considered an authority in the discussions relative to such matters. The deceased was first elected to office here in 1934 and served after taking office in January of 1935, a period of four years. For the next four years he served as deputy treasurer with Mrs. Emily Hagen, treasurer, during that period. He was reelected to office in 1942, assuming office in 1943 and serving until the end of 1947. He then became deputy again, serving with George Keener, treasurer at that time. For many years prior to his entry into public office, he was a bookkeeper for the Hanover Bessemer Mine Co. at Hanover, N.M. Mr. North was a member of Mimbres Lodge AF&AM and was well known and respected throughout this area where he resided for so many years and was in almost constant association with the public. Funeral services, at the time of this writing were not arraigned and pending the arrival of a sister here from a point in the Midwest. Survivors are his widow, Maude, who throughout his years of public service aided him in his work; five brothers, James, Jabez and Hardeman, all of California, and Joe and Flavius of St Louis, Mo., and two sisters, Mrs. Lena Wodds of Missouri and Mrs. Joe Fay in Illinois.

NORTH: Mrs. Evelyn A. North, 83, died at Ft. Bayard Medical Center last Thursday evening. Mrs. North was a native of Missouri and had lived in Silver eight years. Survivors include her husband, Merle; one daughter, Mrs. Lyle Waddell of Alamogordo. Funeral services were held at the Curtis-Bright Funeral Chapel Saturday. Interment followed in Memory Lane Cemetery. The family requests that any memorial donations be made to a favorite church or charity.

NORTH: Mrs. Maude C. North, 75, a resident of Silver City for 50 years, passed away Sunday in Bloomfield, Iowa, where she had lived for the past several years at the home of a sister, Mrs. Flo Fortune. During most of her lifetime in Silver City, Mrs. North had been active in the social and business life of the community. For some years she taught in the elementary school at Fierro and in recent years had been on the staff of the American National Bank. She was the widow of Eugene B. North, who served two terms as treasurer of Grant County. Graveside burial rites will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the Masonic cemetery, with the Rev. C. M. Henderson, of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, officiating. Interment will be under the direction of the Curtis Mortuary. Serving as pallbearers will be Alvin E. Franks, Randolph Franks, Frank Light, Jack Wilson, Clark Doherty and Leroy Marek.

NORTH: Merle S. North, 93, of Alamogordo, died Tuesday in Casa Arena Blanca in Alamogordo. He was born April 4, 1893 in Elpaso, IL. He was a retired machinist with Hughes Aircraft Corp. and was a former resident of Silver City where he was a piano tuner for a number of years. He moved from Silver City to Alamogordo about six years ago. He is survived by a daughter, Helen L. Waddell of Alamogordo; and one brother, Mack North of Oceanside, Calif. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Hamilton Funeral Home chapel. Officiating will be Lee Hubert. Graveside services will be at 1p.m. Friday in Memory Lane Cemetery in Silver City with the Rev. Wayne Sheffield officiating. Hamilton Funeral Home of Alamogordo is in charge of arrangements.

NORTON: Olden Isaac Norton, 75, a World War I veteran, died last Friday at Fort Bayard hospital, he was a retired electrical engineer and a member of the Tularosa Lodge of Masons. The body was sent by Curtis Mortuary to Tularosa for funeral services and burial.

NORVELL: Lydia Dean Norvell, 62, of Central died Oct 9 in her residence, She was born July 5, 1921 in Whitewater, N.M. , the daughter of Frank aid Mary Ferris Pascoe and resided in this area all her life. Mrs. Novell is survived by one son, John W. Norvell of Silver City; five daughters, Fay Stinson of California, Bonnie Joyce Bodrner of Belvadier, Ill., Sylvia Flores of Anaheim Calif., Barbara Jean Salaiz of Central and Eunice Loreto of Central; two sisters, Catherine Reed of Bayard and Margaret Gomes of Central; four brothers, Madison Pascoe of Calif. NOWAK: Mrs. Anna M. Nowak of El Paso died the past week following a long illness. She had been residing at the home of her daughter Mrs. Charles Keys at Bayard for several months. Funeral arrangements were in charge of the Curtis Mortuary. The body was sent to El Paso where, services were held followed by burial.

NUGENT: Mrs. Mary Nugent, a former pioneer resident of Central, passed away in Deming on October 24 at the age of 96. Mrs. Nugent and her late husband built the Central Hotel and were active in business in Central many years ago. Mrs. Nugent moved to Deming in 1929. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Swan Stewart, of Deming. Funeral services were conducted at the Mahoney Funeral Home on Monday with interment in the Mountain View Cemetery. Mrs. Viola Stone, Mrs. Grace Davidson, Mrs. Stella Wiley and Mrs. Hedwig Berger of Central, long-time friends of the deceased, attended the last rites.

Nunez: Esther Lara Nunez, 47, died Sunday in Hurley in an industrial accident. Ms. Nunez was born in Santa Rita and was a lifelong resident of Grant County where she was a communicant of the Santa Clara Catholic Church in Central. She is survived by two daughters, Joyce and Diane Nunez, both of Central; three sons, Steve Nunez of Borger, Texas, and Kevin and Rodney Rivera, both of Silver City; three brothers, Eugene L. Nunez of Tucson, Ariz., Felix L. Nunez of Central and David L. Nunez of Bayard; her father, Celestino R. Nunez of Central; and two grandsons, Steve Nunez Jr. and Daniel Nunez, both of Borger. She was preceded in death by her mother, Venserla Nunez, who died Dec. 22, l986. Rosary recitation will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Wheeler Funeral Home chapel. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at l0 a.m. Thursday in the Santa Clara Catholic Church in Central with the Rev. Paul Ragazinskas officiating. NUNEZ: Celia L. Nunez, 70, a longtime resident of Central entered eternal life Thursday evening at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces. She was born Oct. 14, 1925, in Dwyer, the daughter of Julian and Sadie Lucero. Mrs. Nunez was a homemaker, wife and loving mother. As a mother she had no equal, for she would always put her children's needs before her own. She was a kind and giving person. She was the type of person whom if you knew, you were a better person for it. She was loved deeply by her family and friends. She is survived by her husband Guadalupe A. Nunez of Central; two daughters, Celia L. Nunez of Central, and Linda L. Nunez and her companion, Tony Ramirez, of Silver City and his two children, Amanda and Eddie. Joe Ramirez of Las Cruces; her son, Lupe Nunez of Central; and her sister Celestina Martinez, and her husband, Felipe, of San Jose, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Cecilia Lucero, her brother, Jim S. Lucero. The funeral Mass was to be celebrated this morning at 10 at St. Francis Newman Center with the Rev. Jon Alexander officiating. Concluding services and burial were to follow at Memory Lane Cemetery. NUNEZ: Felix Lara Nunez, 45, lifelong Grant County resident, died Tuesday morning as the result of an industrial accident in the Hurley smelter. He was born March 29, 1942 in Santa Rita and was a U.S. Army and Air Force veteran of the Vietnam era. He was a member of the Santa Clara Catholic Church in Central and was a member of the International Association of Machinists. Calling hours for Mr. Nunez at Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapel are today from 2-5 p.m. followed by rosary services this evening at 7:30 in the Santa Clara Catholic Church in Central. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in the same church. Concluding services will follow in the Fort Bayard National Cemetery with the Rev. Paul Ragazinskas officiating and veteran honors will be accorded by Allingham-Golding Post No. 18 of the American Legion. Mr. Nunez is survived by his wife, Magdalena, and son, Felix Granadino Nunez Jr., both of Central; his father, Celestino Nunez of Central; two brothers, Eugene L. Nunez of Tucson, Ariz., and David L Nunez of Bayard; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by a brother, Raymundo, in 1944; his grandmother, Jovita Nunez, in 1983; his mother, Venserla, in 1986; and a sister Esther Nunez, six months ago in 1987. NUNEZ: Jovita R. Nunez, 87, died Sunday, March 20 at Fort Bayard. Mrs. Nunez was born in Jalisco, Mexico but had been ‘a lifelong resident of Grant County, where she retired from Kennecott. She was a communicant of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Mrs. Nunez is survived by two daughters, Angelita Nunez of Silver City and Marcos Esparza of Deming; 17 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren aid two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Soledad N. Quesada, in 1943. Rosary recitation for Mrs. Nunez was recited Tuesday at the Curtis-Bright Chapel and mass of the resurrection celebrated Wednesday at St. Vincent de Paul with the Rev. A. James Milano officiating Internment followed at the Silver City Catholic Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Claudio N. Quesada, Feliz L. Nunez, Eusebio N. Esparaza, Simon P. Nunez Jr., David L. NUNEZ: In a cave-in at a uranium mine in the Grants mining district the past week, Willie M. Nunez, 34, former resident of Central, was crushed to death. The victim was a veteran of World War II and before the war was a student at Western High School. He had been working at Grants the past several years. Rosary services were held in the American Legion Hall at Hurley, Friday evening. Burial took place Saturday in the Central cemetery. Surviving are his wife, six children, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Santiago Nunez, Central; a sister Mrs. M. Q Herrera, Silver City, and five brothers, Refugio, Hurley, Manual, Silver City, Ray, Grants, and Gabe, Central.

NUNEZ: Venserla 68, died Monday in Silver City. Mrs. Nunez was born in Faywood and was a lifelong resident of Grant County. She was a communicant of the Santa Clara Catholic Church in Central. NUNN: Funeral services were held Monday at the Lake Valley School for Mrs. Emily McLean Nunn, 65, who died last Thursday at the family ranch at Hillsboro. Services were conducted by Rev. Amos N. Gaume of the Deming Episcopal Church and burial was in the Lake Valley cemetery. Mrs. Nunn was born in April, 1892 and attended school at Hillsboro and New Mexico State Normal. She married Emmett Nunn in 1915. She is survived by two sons, Mack Nunn of Belen and Henry Nunn of Hillsboro; two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Burris of Socorro and Mrs. Julia Bloodgood of Silver City and one grandchild.

NUNN: Emmett Milton Nunn, 68, a pioneer rancher of Lake Valley, Sierra County, died in Truth or Consequences hospital Sunday. He was a graduate of Silver City Norman School now New Mexico Western College. Survivors are two sons, Henry Milton and David Nunn of Lake Valley, and two daughters, Mrs. Weldon Burris, Chambray, Luna County, and Mrs. Lee Bloodgood, San Lorenzo, Grant County. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Lake Valley where burial took place.

NUNN: Hiram Jonathan ‘‘Curly’’ Nunn, 73, died Thursday in Albuquerque. Mr. Nunn was born in La Mesa, Texas. Shortly after his birth, his family moved by covered wagon to New Mexico and later to Duncan, Ariz., where he attended school and received a basket ball scholarship which helped to further his education. He began his teaching career at Horse Springs in Catron County and taught at many places in Catron and Grant County. After attending school at New Mexico Western College, he was appointed coach of Hurley High school and was recognized as an excellent coach. He served in the US Navy and upon return was made superintendent of the Santa Rita School at Santa Rita. At this time Mr. Nunn felt the need to have a consolidated school system and was instrumental in the consolidation of what is now known as Cobre Consolidated School District. He was a progressive school pioneer in the state of New Mexico. In 1966 he was named the WNMU Alumni Association and was named to the education Hall of Fame after retiring as principle of CC Snell Junior High. Contributions may be made to the Dialysis Fund. NUNN: Glenna Nunn, 74, of Hatch, a former Bayard resident, entered eternal life Saturday at her home. She was born April 28, 1917, in Hereford, Texas, and moved to the Hatch area in 1990 from Bayard. She was a retired school secretary for Bayard Elementary and a member of the Santa Rita Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. Survivors include a son, Jon L. Nunn of Las Cruces; a daughter, Beverly Franzoy of Salem; two brothers, Lloyd Higgins of Salem and Ted Winder of San Antonio, Texas; four grandchildren, Glenna Baker of Las Cruces, Travis Nunn of Spring Valley, Calif., Shelly Nunn of El Cajon, Calif., and Desiree Franzoy of St. Peters, Mo.; two great-grandchildren, Jarrett and Elizabeth Baker of Las Cruces; and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Baca's Hillcrest Funeral Chapels. The rite of committal will be held the same day, beginning at 2 p.m., in Fort Bayard National Cemetery with Chaplain David Strain officiating. NUNN: Greeley Milton Nunn, 33, a lifetime resident of Deming, died Tuesday in Deming. Visitation will be today from 4-7 p.m. in Baca's Chapel of the Dawn in Deming and funeral services will be held at the same location Friday at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Cemetery with Pastor Bill Crawford officiating. Mr. Nunn was born in Deming, was employed as a rancher, and was a member of Deming Masonic Lodge No. 12. Survivors are his father, Harvey Nunn of Deming; and two sisters, Rose Ann Eby of Faywood and Dorothy Frances Young of Plainview, Texas. NUNN: A memorial service for Nancy Ann Nunn, 65, of Deming will be held at 4 p.m. today at Baca's Funeral Chapel. Nunn died Wednesday at La Posada in Las Cruces. Survivors include her sons, Finley E. Nunn of Granbury, Texas, and Emmett Nunn of Hatch; brothers, Tim O'Neill of Deming, Barney O'Neill of Huntsville, Texas, and P.J. O'Neill of Godfrey, IL; sisters, Gail Seyoc and Patty O'Neill, both of Alton, IL, Meg Narconis of Edwardsville, IL; and nine grandchildren.

NUNN: Mrs. Patty Beats Nunn, 74, of Hillsboro, died Dec. 11 in Mimbres Memorial Hospital in Deming. Funeral services were held at the Nunn Ranch, Tierra Blanca. Mahoney Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Nunn, widow of the late Pryor Nunn, was the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Guy Seals of Hillsboro. She was a retired teacher in the Sierra County school system and former school board member. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Rebekah Lodge. Survivors include two sons, A. E. and Bill Nunn, both of Deming; a daughter, Mrs. Ida Kilo Rush, Maxwell, N. M.; a sister, Mrs. Carolyn Beals Osborne of Deming; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
