Asian countries before going to Europe to study engineering at the University of
Berlin. It was in Berlin that he first became interested in opera. He then went

of Italian grand opera, and, in 1934, made his professional operatic debut in
the opera "Sonambula." Mr. Ocheltree was tenor soloist in the Sacre Coeur
Cathedral in Paris, and was singing with the Paris Opera when the Nazis invaded
France during World War II. He was performing "Faust" in Montreal, Canada when
the United States entered the war. With his knowledge of Europe and fluency in
German, Italian and French, he worked for the Office of War Information, first

working undercover for allied intelligence. Stationed in London during the Nazi
bombing, he broadcast for "Voice of America," transmitting to Nazi-occupied
countries in Europe. He returned to opera after the war, singing in Europe until
