While serving in the Philippines, the embattled American and British forces surrendered to the Japanese army April 9, 1942. Surrender brought no rest or relief to the sick and starving defenders of Bataan. They were marched 60 miles on a trip through hell, since known as the Death March. Some 75,000 troops began the march but only 54,000 reached its end. The ordeal did not end with imprisonment. Some 19,000 men perished of disease, hunger or maltreatment during the march and imprisonment. Mr. Villaloboz was a survivor of this horror. After the war, he returned to Silver City and told his story to countless high school and college students in the area. He told of how the prisoners hid a few grains of rice in the folds of their clothes to supplement their daily rations of a scant cup of rice and how others were brutally killed for merely speaking to each oher. His efforts of teaching the lessons of Bataan were a driving force in his life. He once stated: "I do not want them to forget those who suffered and died for their country. Maybe I can help them learn what it means to be an American." In 1984, nearly 40 years after the war, Mr. Villaloboz and other survivors were finally recognized for their bravery and were awarded the Bronze Star Medal.
