GRANT COUNTY POST OFFICES
Transportation of Mail in Grant County

When gold was discovered at Pinos Altos in 1859, nothing could keep the swarms of prospectors and miners from the area. Supplies, and mail, for the new residents of the area were brought in from Socorro and Fort Craig. The first post office established in what is now Grant County was in Pine Forrest in 1860. Fort McRae, just to the east of what is now Elephant Butte, was established in 1863. By the time the Fort Bayard and Pinos Altos Post Offices were opened in 1867, a stage line had been established from Fort McRae to the fast growing Pinos Altos area. Grant County formed in 1868, mostly from the western portion of Dona Ana County. Pinos Altos, being the largest town and having the best transportation, was the first county seat.

The Silver City Post Office was established in 1871. Star Routes were approved to carry the mail to Fort Bayard and Pinos Altos. Georgetown and Santa Rita were added to the Fort Bayard route when their post offices were opened. Silver City soon established itself as the trade center for the area and became the largest city in the county. In 1874 the County Seat was moved to Silver City. A New Mexico map dated 1879 shows that stage routes had been established from Socorro through Horse Springs and Gila to Silver City. Another route originated at Fort Thorn through Fort McLane and terminated in Silver City. A route also arrived in Silver City from a connection to the Butterfield Stage Route to the south.

In 1881 a short Star Route was established to carry the mail from Hudson Station to the newly established Hudson Post Office. This route was extended into the eastern part of the county as more post offices were established. Grant County lost some territory in the northeast corner when Sierra County was formed in 1884 and more land in 1901. When Luna County was established almost half of the county was taken into Hidalgo County in 1919. The Silver City, Deming and Pacific Railroad was completed into Silver City on August 1, 1884. The line was leased to the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. The AT&SF RR purchased the line in 1899. Railway Post Office RPO) service was provided on this line.

The completion of the railroad ended the need for the long Star Route from Socorro. This route was abolished and a new route was established to provide service to the post offices between Silver City and Mogollon. The first post office in the western section of the county was established in 1884 at Carlisle. The mail was routed to Duncan, Arizona, to be delivered to Carlisle by a Star Route. By 1885, the only routes operating out of the Silver City Post Office were to Mogollon and Pinos Altos.

In 1886, a route was established out of the Lordsburg Post Office to provide mail service to Gold Hill. Another route was later added out of Lordsburg to the newly established post office at Redrock. The AT&SF RR built two branch lines into the mining districts from Whitewater. The line to Santa Rita was completed in 1898 and the line to Fierro in 1899. Mail service was provided to Santa Rita, Hanover and Fierro on both lines by the RPO. The Star Routes to these post offices were abolished.

A new Star Route was established in 1901 to provide mail to the new Teel Post Office. This route also served Georgetown and Mimbres. A Star Route was added from Silver City to the new post office in Leopold in 1904. Tyrone was added to this route when their post office was opened in 1906. Around 1916 the new railroad spur line from Burro Mountain Junction, on the Deming to Silver City railroad, began carrying mail to Tyrone. Only a Special Supply Route was continued out of the Silver city Post Office to provide supplemental service. This rail service continued until 1934.

The Mule Creek Post Office was established in 1916. To provided mail service to the new office, a route was created out of the Jackson Post Office. The RPO mail service to Santa Rita, Hanover and Fierro was discontinued in 1935. A Star Route was established between Silver City and Whitewater to replace the rail service. The RPO service from Deming to Silver City was abolished in 1953. A Star Route was established to replace the trains. Mother Nature threw obstacles at the automobile transportation that had not impacted the railroads. Mail was often delayed due to highways being closed during very bad sand storms and flash floods.

Grant County received its first scheduled Air Mail service with the establishment of Air Mail Route #93 on December 1, 1951. Special cachet envelopes were issued at the Silver City and Hurley Post Offices to commemorate the event. With the creation of ZIP Codes in 1963, Las Cruces was designated as the Sectional Center Facility (SCF) for the 880 ZIP Code area. The SCF offices were responsible for the distribution and transportation of the mail for their ZIP Code areas. Since the Silver City Post Office had already established itself as the hub for the routes within the county, the changes involved in the transportation of mail had very little impact on the offices.

The discontinuance of RPO services nation wide in 1967 had very little impact on the Grant County Post Offices. Additional Highway Contract Routes were established out of Albuquerque and Las Cruces to carry the mail once handled by the railroads. The transportation routes have changed very little since the 1960s. Only the discontinuance of post offices and changes in the departure or arrival times have impacted the routes.
