William Haden Stockton, Sr. was born in Cumberland County, Kentucky to Robert Stockton and Nancy Blakey. He was married three times and had numerous children. He left Kentucky and moved to Palo Pinto, Texas. He lived there for a while and then moved to Colfax County, New Mexico. William was a cattle rancher. He later moved to the Mule Creek area of Grant County, New Mexico, where he established a ranch in a beautiful valley of luscious grass and water, with live oak, juniper and piñon trees. As time went by and he knew he would be leaving this old world before long, he picked a place to be buried. The spot was between two juniper trees, which have grown to be majestic specimens. Today that part of his ranch is called Hardin Cienaga. The name Haden has changed to Hardin through the years.
