Virden Catholic Cemetery History Virden Catholic Cemetery is in
the western part of New Mexico between Lordsburg and
Duncan, AZ. The Virden Catholic Cemetery is also
known as San Antonio de Gila Cemetery. In 1980,
Petra Rodriguez Mungia organized several families,
Duart, Vegas, Bejarano and Tellez, to restore this
cemetery. This cemetery is currently maintained by
Raymond Bejarano and Tony Burrola. Myrtle Nelson
provided additional data for this exhibit on 28
April 2007. The town of Richmond was settled on
Highway 92 about thirty miles NW of Lordsburg in
1870. It was called the Virginia Mining District and
dubbed Richmond referring to the capital of
Virginia. This was an Hispanic settlement. In 1912 a
wave of Mormon settlers left Mexico and purchased
land from the New Mexico Mining company. The
President at that time was Earnest W. Virden. In
1916 the town became Virden, changed from the name
of Richmond. |
