- (2/16/23) Hollis Smelcher, alias Buck Smelcher, and W.G. Lafaver, alias Bill Morris, of Amarillo were arrested Tuesday 45 miles east of Corona by A.S. McCamant and Jack Chancey after they and an 18 year old girl stole 2 saddles from Graciano Yriart. They were brought to Corona for an examining trial before Justice of the Peace W.G. Chancey, who bound them over to await trial. McCamant and Yriart were taking the unbound prisoners to Carrizozo in a Ford car. 15 miles from Carrizozo the prisoners overpowered McCamant and Yriart and took their guns and car. They drove to Alamogordo where they shot sheriff W.L. Rutherford at a gas station. They ran out of gas at White Sands and were apprehended in Oro Grande after injuring Sheriff Bradford of Alamogordo

McCamant, E. S. - (3/2/23) Letter: After receiving a certain amount of criticism for our action in withdrawing our children from the Corona school we feel constrained to make the following explanation for so doing; the intolerable conditions existing in the school, and have for several years, including favoritism shown some pupils, and neglect of others; Incompetence of some of the teachers, all resulting in failure of many pupils to advance in their studies, our own children among them. We have complained of this to all in authority, including the principal, Board of Trustees, and County Supervisor, all of which have been ignored. We therefore feel justified in withdrawing from the school.

- (6/1/23) a forest fire burned 640 acres, 2 miles long on the west slope of Gallinas Mountain. It was started by lightening and discovered by Ranger J.H. Mims on Saturday afternoon. The fire started Friday and strong winds spread it. 50 local men battled the blaze

Tuesday 45 miles east of Corona by A.S. McCamant and Jack Chancey after they and an 18 year old girl stole 2 saddles from Graciano Yriart. They were brought to Corona for an examining trial before Justice of the Peace W.G. Chancey, who bound them over to await trial. McCamant and Yriart were taking the unbound prisoners to Carrizozo in a Ford car. 15 miles from Carrizozo the prisoners overpowered McCamant and Yriart and took their guns and car. They drove to Alamogordo where they shot sheriff W.L. Rutherford at a gas station. They ran out of gas at White Sands and were apprehended in Oro Grande after injuring Sheriff Bradford of Alamogordo
