2012 Update
Following is the jest of recent correspondence with an eye witness of R. L.
Lee's Grave:
Sir:
While stationed for Army duty in El Paso Texas in 1967, I traveled highway 54
many times to visit my wives Aunt in
Alamogordo New Mexico. I came upon the Grave site of Shorty R. Lee which is very close
to the Trinity Site. At that time, it had a white picket fence around it. It
also had a Bronze marker which was donated by Winchester Arms Co. or Remington
Arms co. I found this grave intriguing because it was very close to the highway.
I remember telling my wife that if they ever widened the highway, they would
have to move Shorty's grave.
The marker read, as I remember it:
Here lies Shorty R, Lee, No known relatives. He was
struck by lightning on a cattle drive in 1907.
I hope this email is helpful in your search for more information about this
matter. Personally, I found this to be factual.
The photos enclosed were taken at the grave in 1986. At the bottom of one photo one
can seen the brass plaque. I first saw the grave in 1967. The wire fence was
between the highway and the grave. I was looking toward the the east.
The barb wire fence was between the highway and the grave.
