Lower Penasco
Arthur J. Mieiring
A Post Office called "Lower Penasco" was established in Lincoln County on November 11, 1884. J. B. Mathews, the first Postmaster, was a Deputy Sheriff at one time for Pat Garrett. Probably was too busy to stay around to attend to Post Office matters for the records indicate that he turned the job over to his wife, Mrs. Dora M. Mathews on Jan. 21, 1885. She held the office until April 26 of the year when James F. Hinkle received the appointment. This was the beginning of holding public office and keeping public trust for Hinkle. He was also mayor of Roswell and president of the First National Bank of Roswell for many years.
Lincoln County records show Melta Bryan as Postmaster from March
19, 1887 to October 6, 1891 followed by Ella M. Mugg and after her Mary B.
March, July 7, 1894. The exact date of the discontinuation of the Lower Penasco
office is not known but it did take place after it went into Chavez County which
was carved out of Lincoln County, May, 1889.
