The People of the Camino Real: A
Genealogical Appendix Soldiers and Settlers after the Restoration period, 1697-1800 -excerpted from pp. 155-157 After 1696, the Spanish established stable relations with Native Americans. The more recent settlers founded new settlements such as Santa Cruz de la Canada -1695 and Albuquerque -1706. Families spread from these settlements to form small villages. Santa Cruz de la Canada settlers formed the villages of Chama to the west, Nuestra Senora de Rio Arriba de la Soledad to the north, and to the east and northeast Chimayo, Quemado -Cordova, Truchas, Las Tramps, Chamisal, Santa Barbara, and Taos. Settlements were also established along the south of the Rio Grande Valley at Bernalillo, Alameda, Albuquerque, Atrisco, Valencia, Suazal, Tome, and Belen. The Camino Real went north from Santa Fe to Santa Cruz. From there, one branch went to the area of San Juan Pueblo and another into the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the settlements in the area of Picuris Pueblo and on to the Taos Pueblo and nearby settlements. Families grew in the early decade of the 1700s. Intermarriages among the colonizing families created new and extended family groups. Few family groups came to New Mexico in the 1700s. Single men came mainly as soldiers. Here listed are names of New Mexico families established between 1697 and 1800, with place of origin and earliest known date of appearance in New Mexico records.
