close friend of Charles Bent, and the other's son had met a particularly horrible
death the night of Bent's murder. The jury, composed partly of friends and
relatives of the slain men, repeatly announced, to no one's surprise, verdicts of
guilty and sentence of death. In fifteen working days between the fifth and
twenty-fourth of April, fifteen out of seventeen men were convicted of murder,
one out of five for High Treason and six out of seventeen for larcency. The
executions for murder were carried out on an improvised gallows with borrowed
lariats and tether ropes."
