The first report was that the 3 hunters seemed to have killed a horse and were butchering it to use as bait for the animals they were hunting, and that Antonio Maria Martinez had seen them and they had killed him. Later reports make no mention of the horse or of the hunters butchering it...One of the hunters named Dawson was found with gunshots to his right leg and to his left shoulder. The hunters arrested were F. S. Cooper and G. W. Dawson the third one named Ed Stewart could not be found. At a Preliminary hearing Jan 1915 before Justice of the Peace I. W. Dwire Ed Stewart of Raton, NM was released because he was able to prove that he was elsewhere at the time of the shooting and there was no evidence to connect him to the crime. At the scene on the ground covered snow there was no sign of struggle or fight. He had been shot from behind. The wounded hunter G. W. Dawson says that the man who shot him had a white beard and was wearing a white hat, Martinez had neither. Ramon Roybal from San Cristobal, NM had both, a white beard and was wearing a white hat. Roybal had tried to purchase medicine to treat wounds at the Tomas Vasquez store in San Cristobal,NM store. Mr. Vasquez did not have the medicine requested but sold him a similar type. Later telling others that the man fell of a tree and injured (stabbed) him self on a broken branch.
