1- Erica Putney, 72, of Taos Passed away at Holy Cross Hospital 27 Dec 1996. She
was a prominent concert violinist in Europe and Iceland and was very active in
the Baha'i Faith and an itenerant teacher. She is survived by her husband George
A. Putney of Taos. 10 children, 21 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

2- Jeannie L. Silva, of Taos passed away at her residence on January 15,1996 of
complications due to years of suffering. She is survived by her husband Bobby
Silva; Children Scott (Shandra) Emsweller, Shawn (Gabe) Medina, Michele
Emsweller, Melissa (Billy) Dickerson, Shane Emsweller and Leah Vigil who is like
a daughter; Grandchildren Nicole, Kylee Medina, Shatel Dickerson and Shane
Emsweller. A Private burial was held with Pastor Craig Emsweller Officiating. 18

3- Mary D. Kilgore, born 18 Sept 1937 in McAlester, Oklahoma passed away 12 Jan
1996 in Taos, NM. She is survived by her husband of 42 years William R.
Kilgore,Jr. M. D. of Taos; Daughter M. Karen Kilgore of Santa Fe, NM; Son W.
Ransom Kilgore III, M. D. and wife Mary Jane of Whichita, Kansas.; Brother Neal
E. Merriott of Atoka, Okla and 4 grandchildren, Katherine Merriott Kilgore,
William Evan Kilgore, Christian Coleman Kilgore and Mary Chesley Kilgore. Burial

4- Rosana S. Cordova, 69, (AKA Rose Cordova) a life long resident of Lower
Ranchitos in Taos, NM. Passed away 7 Jan 1996 after a short illness. She was
preceded in death by her mother, Rosana A. Martinez 25 Jan 1926, father Santiago
Martinez 1943 and only brother Onesimo Martinez 1984. She was raised by Benjamin
and Josephina Sanchez who preceded her in death in 1957 and 1970 respectively.

5- Charles Egri, 86, died suddenly and unexpectedly on Saturday 6 Jan 1996 at
the Chelsea Community Hospital. He was born 13 July 1909 in New York, New York,
the son of Lajos and Illona Egri. Mr. Egri moved to Chelsea in August of 1995
coming from New York City. He was an innovative and creative artist, who worked
in a variety of mediums including oils, watercolors, collages, mixed media, 3
dimensional arts, prints. He was a true New Yorker, who's humor will be missed
by all. Survivors include 2 sons, Bob Egri of Dexter and Guy (Jan) Egri of South
Hero, Ct.; Brother Ted Egri of Taos, NM; Sister Ruth Holden of Denver, Co, 1
grandson and 1 nephew. Memorial service were held held sunday 7 Jan 1996 at 2:00
PM. at the Chelsea Retirement Community's Town Hall.11 Jan 1996 B-5.
6- Evan Gonzales Sanchez, 83, of Pueblo,Co. Passed away 22 Dec 1995. Born in
Vadito, NM 14 Sept 1912. Mrs. Sanchez was a member of the Holy Family Church and
an active volunteer for S. R. D. A. She was preceded in death by father Miguel
Gonzales, mother Maria Inez Fernandez, husband Otoniel Sanchez, brother Pete
Gonzales and three sisters Tomasita Finn, Antonia Chavez and Alice Gonzales.She
will be greatly missed by her children Jose (Doreen) Sanchez, Tillie Munoz,
Adrian (Larry), Leanne Dunford, Tony Sanchez, William (Janice) Sanchez, Nelson
Sanchez, Gilbert Sanchez, Manuel (Pat) Lenzini, Robert (Mary) Sanchez and Mary
Sanchez; Brother Faris Sanchez; Sister Emily (Joe) Sisneros; Brother-in-law
Henry Finn; Sister-in-law Alice Gonzales. 23 Grandchildren and 5 great

7- Patrick James "Jim" Kirby died in San Marino, Ca. Tuesday 16 Jan 1996. He was
born in Seattle on Oct 15, 1913, yet spent most of his life in Southern
California. He was the owner of the Kirby cattle Company in Cerros de Taos, NM.
Spending a great deal of time in the Taos area. Survived by his wife of 54
years, Betty McClintock Kirby; Children Mary Kirby Burns of Salt Lake City, Ut
and Christopher P. Kirby of Portland, Or. Grandchildren Behle and Kyra Burns of
Salt Lake City, Ut, and Catie Kirby of Portland, Or. Service were held at St.
Felicitas and Perpetua Church, San Marino, Ca. 25 Jan 1996 A-14.
8- Bella M. Mondragon, 55, of Talpa, NM. Passed away ay Holy Cross Hospital 23
Jan 1996 after a lengthy illness. She was a mail carrier from the Ranchos Post
Office for over 16 years. Survived by her husband Gilbert A. Mondragon of Talpa,
NM; Daughters Monica Mondragon of Talpa, Louella Mondragon and finance Dean
Silva of El Prado, NM; Grand daughter Miranda Archuleta; Brothers Andres Chavez
and Joe Chavez; Sisters Dolores Bundy, Ernestine LeDoux, Carolina Espinosa, Mary
Ann Olguin, Eneanor Chavez, Juanita Piontkowski and Sophia Lopez. Interment at

9- Juan Meliton DeHerrera, 62, of Taos, NM Passed away 27 Jan 1996 as a result
of an automobile accident. He is survived by his wife Connie Deherrera of Taos;

10- Maria Finnia Padilla, 95, of Arroyo Hondo passed away 23 Jan 1996 at her
home. She was preceded in death by her son Arturo Padilla in 1975. She is
survived by her children John and wife Angie Padilla of denver, Fares and wife
Juana Padilla of Denver, Joe and wife Elva Padilla of Denver, Pascual and wife
Cathy Padilla of Arroyo Hondo, Abran and wife Rosario Padilla of Tucson, Az,
Roger and wife Angela Padilla of Arroyo Hondo, Robert and wife Merlinda Anaya of
El Prado, and her daughter Maria Martinez of Denver. Interment at Arroyo Hondo,

11- Mollie Williams Bryan resident of La Plaza de Retiro since Sept 1987, died
Wednesday 24 Jan 1996. Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1909. She subsequently lived
in New York City, Connecticut, and Cambridge, Mass. She came to Taos, NM in the
early 1970's to be a full time grandmother to her two grandsons, Nate and Davey
Bryan, formerly of the Taos Ski Valley. An experienced nursery school teacher
and dyslexia therapist, she tutored school children in Arroyo Seco. Amongst her
other volunteer activities were work at the library, the TAA and docent at the
Fechin House. She is survived by her son Tony Bryan of the Ski Valley and Vail;
Daughter Barbara Bryan of New York City; Brother Edward P. Williams of Essex.
Conn. A memorial service will be planned for the spring. 1 Feb 1996 A-16.
12- Richard Joseph Jaramillo, 39, of Ranchos de Taos, NM. Previously of
Cheyenne, Wyoming passed away unexpectedly 25 Jan 1996 in Taos, NM. He worked as
a foreman for the Burlington-Northern Railroad for 16 years and most recently
worked at the Taos Motel. He is survived by his wife Lynn A. Jaramillo; Children
Chrystina M. Jaramillo, Andrew P. Jaramillo, Lisa M. Jaramillo and an expectant
grandchild all of Cheyenne, Wyo; Mother Matilda Hollobaugh (Wiiliam), Father
Ernest Jaramillo of Cheyenne, Wyo; Brothers David L. Jaramillo, Daniel
Jaramillo, Phillip Jaramillo, Ernie Joe Jaramillo and Gregory M. Jaramillo;

13- Willie E. Coca, 64, of Talpa, NM. Passed away 27 Jan 1996 as a result of an
automobile accident. He served in the US Air Force and was a member of the NM
National Guard Taos Unit. He was called to Active duty during the Korean War. He
was employed at Kirtland Air Force Base where he retired after 25 years of
service. He is survived by wife Andrea Coca of Talpa; Children Ernest J. Coca
and fiance France Monica Lucero of Talpa, Johnny A. Coca and fiance Cleo Maestas
of Ranchos de Taos, daughter Sandra (Dominick) Vigil of Seattle, Wa; Grandson
Ernest J.Coca; Mother Donelia Coca of Talpa; Brothers Arthur Coca and Robert R.

14- Tim Harter, 38, of Taos Ski Valley, NM. Was killed Sunday 4 Feb 1996. He was
skiing in the Wheeler Peak Wilderness in the Carson National Forest near Taos
Ski Valley, when he triggered a large slide in a historical avalanche chute he
was killed by the avalanche. He had moved from California to the Taos Ski Valley
almost 20 years ago. He and his wife Laurie married about 12 and one half years
ago. They owned the popular Stray Dog Cantina and Tim's Chile Connection at Taos
Ski Valley, NM. Survived by his wife Laurie Harter, Also survived by son Hank
Harter; Father Donn A. Harter; Brother Todd Harter; Sisters Karen and Denise. 8

15- Flaviano Manchego, 83, died at his home in Garcia, Co. 30 Jan 1996. Survived

16- Cecilia "Lila" Segura, 78, of Cerro passed away 5 Feb 1996 at Holy Cross
Hospital. She is survived by her children Olivia E. Cortez of Roswell, NM and
Elfidio Espinosa of Cerro, NM; Brothers Reginaldo (Rosanna) Archuleta of Cerro,
Roger (Feloniz) Archuleta of Cerro and Luby (Viola) Archuleta of Rio Rancho; 10
grandchildren, 22 great grand children and 4 great great grand children. Burial

17- Emily Romero, 69, passed away 24 Jan 1996. She is survived by 7 children
(names not listed). Mother Pablita Rivali; Brothers Manuel, Alex and Jessie
Medina; Sisters Lydia Herrera and Isabel Jaramillo. Funeral was in Salt lake

18- Joseph Ronald Strawbridge III, RNCCNP, 51, of Taos Passed awy 7 Feb 1996. He
practiced at La Clinica for many years. A graveyard service was held Saturday 10

19- Juan J. Montoya (affectionely known as J. J. Montoya) 90, of El Prado, NM.
Passed away 8 Feb 1996 at Holy Cross Hospital. He was a rancher, farmer, former
Taos County Commissioner. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Juanita of El
Prado; Children Arturo (Eufracia) Montoya of El Prado, Cora (J. Rumaldo) Garca
of Ranchos de Taos, Ernesto ( Dolores) Montoya of El Prado and Lillian (Robert
l.) Martinez of El Prado. Preceded in death by his daughter Alice Lorraine
Montoya in 1946. Also surviving him are 9 grandchildren and 7 great
grandchildren; Brothers J. Isidro (Cirilita) Montoya of Taos and Tomas Montoya

20- Santiago "Tayo" Ortega, 69, of Questa passed away at the VA Medical Center
in Albuq 7 Feb 1996. He is survived by his wife Ida Maria of Questa; Children
Jimmy (Jolanda) Ortega, Anna LaCome, Tobias Ortega and Joseph (Martha) Ortega
all of Questa; 10 grandchildren and 1 great great grand daughter; Brothers Ruben
Ortega, Bernie Ortega, Eulogio Ortega Jr.; Sisters Cecilia Gonzales, Loresia

21- Mary G. Cabot, 71, of Taos passed away at Plaza de Retiro 14 Feb 1996. She
is survived by her children Mary Ann (Abraham) Ramirez, Maya Chacon and Madeline
(Lionel) Salazar and 7 grandchildren. Interment was private. 22 Feb 1996 B-7.
Mary Gutierrez Cabot was born in Dawson, NM 16 Nov 1924 to Pedro Gutierrez and
Carolina Sigala. She married Edward Clark Cabot in 1955. They were owners of El
Crepusculo the Taos news paper. When she was a young girl she was the only
female member of the popular Melodymakers where she played "a mean Sax". She was
the director of the Taos Valley Boys Club of America for five years. 22 Feb 1996

22- Filomena Romero Mascarenas, 93, Passed away at her residence in Vadito 16
Feb 1996. Preceded in death by her husband Elizardo in 1979 and 3 children
Teofilita Montoya in 1994, Lillian Mascarenas in 1992 and Nelson Mascarenas in
1992. She is survived by children Rafaelita (Eliseo) Borrego of Vadito, Tillie
Apodaca of Las Vegas, NM, Alice Romero of Albuq, Fabiola Masceranas of Denver,
Eli (Flora) Mascareanas of Whichita, Kansas, Clarence (Naomi) Masceranas of El
Valle, NM, Ruth (Demetrio0 Ortega of Penasco; 38 Grandchildren, 62 Great
grandchildren and 7 great great grand children; Brothers Raymundo Romero and

23- Magdalena Maes, 100, of Valdez passed away at Holy Cross Hospital 14 Feb
1996. She is survived by her chldren Manuel (Lupe) Maes of Albuq, Fedelina
Trujillo of Angel Fire, Amadeo Maes of Albuq, Mercedes Jaramillo of Questa,
Cecilia (Fred) Rael of Questa; 28 Grandchildren, 48 Great Grandchildren and 15
Great grandchildren. Interment at the Valdez, NM Cemetery. 22 Feb 1996 B-7.
24- Joe H. Montoya, 36, of Cerro was killed in a one vehicle accident on State
road 150 Monday 19 Feb 1996. The accident occurred at approximately 8:00 PM as
Montoya was headed westbound on the highway, he lost control of his pickup as he
rounded a curve and the vehicle flipped several times, ejecting the driver.
Montoya the sole occupant of the vehicle was transported to Holy Cross Hospital
where he was pronounced dead on arrival. 22 Feb 1996 A-2. Joe H. Montoya was a
horse lover and had just purchased 27 acres in Cerro on which to build his dream
of having his own working ranch. Montoya was the owner of Taos Tractor Trailers
and worked at Taos Ski valley. He was active in the 4-H Sky Riders Club and the
Taos County Sheriff's Posse. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club, Taos
County Crimestoppers and the Taos Gideons. He is survived by his wife Sandy and
son Eloy Montoya of Cerro; Parents Ernesto and Doris Montoya of Des Montes; Six

25- D. C. Moore, 91, long time resident of Taos Canyon passed away 3 March 1996,
in Ocala, Fl. He is survived by his wife Velma of Ocala, Fl; Son Stan Moore of
Taos; Daughter-in-law Frida Moore; Brother Harvey Moore of Taos Canyon; Grandson
Dennis Moore of Pueblo, Co; Grand daughter Dawn Brandon of Victorville, Ca. and
4 great grandchildren. 7 March 1996 B-6.
26- Esther V. Vargas, 93, of Ranchitos passed away at Holy Cross Hospital 28 Feb
1996. Preceded in death by her husband Juan B. Vargas and children Juanita
Martinez, Johnny Vargas and Isabel Vargas. She is survived by 2 daughters
Fabiola (Oliver) Olivas and Amy (Lawrence) Crites; Sons Felix (Eduvigen) Vargas,
Ernesto (Connie) Vargas, Robert Vargas and Henry Vargas; Son-in-law Roberto M.
Martinez; 29 Grand children, 40 great grand children and 5 great grand children.

27- Julia T. Fernandez, 75, of Ranchos de Taos, NM. Passed away at her residence
26 Feb 1996. She was born in Pagosa Springs, Co and grew up in Durango. She
graduated from Durango High School and married Louis F. Fernandez in 1942, They
celebrated their 54th anniversary 15 Feb 1996. She was a member of Catholic
Daughters of The Americas, The Guadalupanas, coordinated Senior Citizens affairs
and was involved in other parish activities at St. Francis de Asis Church in
Ranchos de Taos, NM. She is survived by her husband Louis; Children Elizabeth
Trujillo (Ernest Martinez) of Santa Fe, Josephine (Jim) Turner of Madera, Ca,
Francis (Gloria Jeanne) Fernandez of Albuq, Toni (Michael) Knight of Taos,
Rafael T. (Diane) Fernandez of Albuq, Jeanette T. Fernandez of Phoenix, Manuel
A. (Loretta) Fernandez of Rio Rancho and Marcia A. Labrum of Pecos; 22
grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; Special niece Zelma Tafoya of Nevada;
Sister Virginia Wilcoxson of Texas; Sisters-in-law Margaret Fernandez, Pita
Jeantette, Fabiola Lucero, Irene Trujillo and Cecilia Martinez; Brothers-in-law

28- William Tyrus Miller, 84, passed away 2 March 1996. Bill was a businessman
in Taos since the 1950's. He is survived by his sister Margaret Mundorff;
Daughters Carolyn McAdoo and Margaret Gibson; Son Tom. A memorial will be held
at Kachina Lodge on March 17 at 1:00 PM. 14 March 1996 B-3.
29- David C. Padilla, formerly of Taos, passed away suddenly 29 Feb 1996 in West
Jordan, Utah. Born in Taos, New Mexico 8 Nov 1929, the third child of Max E.
Padilla and Herminia Solano Padilla, was well known locally. He is survived by
his wife Anita Pacheco Padilla, formerly of Trampas, NM and children Phil
Padilla (Cindy), Virginia Padilla, Gerald Padilla ( Vicky), Christine Padilla,
Elsa Cruz, Ardenio Benavidez (Adelia), Nancy B. Corral (Pet) Jayne Delon, Lisa
Hansen (Tim); 25 grandchildren and 13 great grand children; Brother John
Padilla; Sisters Eleanor Greer, Clem Pacholka, Bessie Delo; Former wife Lydia
Vigil. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Herminia, grandchildren
Maritza Sanchez and Christian Delon, his brother Max M. Padilla and sister
Stella Amberzon. Padilla was a USMC Sergeant veteran of the Korean War, and had
retired as a platoon sergeant and instructor with 25 years in the Utah National

30- Dr. Henry A. Sauerwein, long time Canon, NM resident passed away Friday 15
March 1996 at La Plaza de Retiro where he had been living since January.
Following a three- year struggle with cancer. Sauerwein fell seriously ill just
before Christmas last year. He was born 7 Jan 1918 in Baltimore, Md., He earned
his first doctor's degree at John Hopkin's University when he was just 25 years
old. He was conversant in 6 languages and could read in 14 languages. Sauerwein
moved to Taos in 1951. He began work for the Harwood Foundation driving a book
mobile traveling to 43 communities outside of Taos. He became the director of
the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation in 1954, At his request there will be no
services. Interment of his ashes will be at Sierra Vista Cemetery. 21 March 1996

31- Elias B. Casia, 64, of Arroyo Seco passed away at his residence on 11 March
1996. He was a sheepherder, former worker of the State Highway Dept. and most
recently worked at the Kit Carson Park. He is survived by his wife Cordelia of
Arroyo Seco; 5 Children Elaine (Julian) Casias, Elies Casias Jr., James Casias
of Arroyo Seco, Barbara Casias of Ca, and Herman (Chelsie) Casias of Fl;
Grandchildren Juan Varos IIi, Jose Varos, Levi Casias, Lisa and Becky; Brothers
Manuel, Jacobo and Abran Casias; Sisters Elisa and Agustina Valerio. Interment
at Holy Trinity Cemetery. 21 March 1996 B-4.
32- Bettie Selph Medrano, was born 10 March 1903 to Iley N. Selph Sr. and
Carolina Sandoval Selph. She married Alejandro Medrano in 1929. They had an only
son Thomas Alejandro Medrano. Bettie graduated from Allison James school in
1925. She taught school in Talpa and Rio Medio. She retired from The Bureau of
Revenue State of New Mexico. Preceded in death by her parents, husband and son
and by 3 brothers Iley Jr., Thomas Selph and Hardy Selph, 2 sisiters. Lillie S.
Miera and Carlotta S. Cox. She is survived by Ronald and Jeanie Quintana whom
she raised, her brother Frank and Cora of Santa Fe. 3 sisters Annie Quintana of
El Prado, Emma (Luis) Duran of Albuq and Andrea S. Vigil of Ranchos de Taos;
Sisters-in-law Pina (Bennie) Armijo, Emilia Ponce, Manda Selph, her beloved Tia
Delia Sandoval, Her nephews and nieces who educated her by calling her grandma,
other relatives and friends such as Eddie and BC Rimbert, Rebecca Trujillo and
Elvira O'campo. Interment at the Rosario Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM. 21 March 1996

33- Emilia M. Romero, 95, of Llano Quemado, NM, passed away 17 March 1996 at
Holy Cross Hospital in Taos. She was preceded in death by husband Abencio J.

34- Elmer D. Parham, 75, of Fairview (Espanola, NM) jumped to his death Thursday
28 March 1996, from the railing of the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. According to
Barry Holfelder, State Police Search and Rescue incident commander, a witness
saw Parham perched on the edge of the bridge. The witness a young man hollered
at him "Don't do that, get down from there." He did get of the rail but then
crawled back up and jumped off. 28 March 1996 A-1.

37- Ernesto "Father Stone" Martinez, 58, died Monday 25 March 1996 at the Vail
Valley Medical Center in Vail, Co after a lengthily illness. He was born 18 Aug
1937 in Arroyo Seco, NM to Mauricio Celestino Martinez and Agnes (Martinez)
Sanchez. Preceded in death by his father and sister Maria Garcia. He attended
schools in Taos, NM and Cheyenne, Wyo. Until he entered the Army. After the Army
he returned to Taos and built a house but after 2 years due to the unemployement
in Taos he and his family moved to Minturn, Co. Where he lived for 38 years. He
is survived by his wife Frances Gutierrez Martinez of Edwards, Co; Sons James
"Chico" (Theresa) Martinez, Eli Martinez; Daughters Bernice Trujillo, Suzette
(Morris) and Roberta (Martin Torres) Martinez, Margie (David) Sanchez all of Co,

died Sunday 7 April 1996. Presnall was Pastor at Cherry Road Baptist Church in
Memphis, Tenn.; First Presbyterian Church in Borger, Texas; and at the Ranchos
de Taos Presbyterian. He was a Pastor for 42 years.He is survived by his wife,
Elaine Presnall of Santa Fe; Mother Ruby Presnall of Texas; Brother Dixon

39- Corina (Cora) Irine Stevener has passed away in Fort Worth, Texas. She was
the daughter of Jose Ignacio Santistevan and Susana Moore Santistevan, born 4
April 1896 in the family home on La Lomas, Taos, NM. She was preceded in death
by brothers William "Bill", Ubaldo, Jose Alejandro, Ubaldo Magin Santsitevan and
sisters Odila Santistevan, Matilde Maes, Adela Thomas, Mercedes LaBaugh and her
husband Herbert Stevener. "Cora" attended the Sisters of Loretto school and
Highlands Normal Teacher's Preparatory School in Las Vegas, NM.She married Ramon
Baca and they both taught school in Socorro, Lemitar and Albuq, NM.After moving
to El Paso, Tx, she entered civil service, teaching Spanish to Border Patrol
Guards, while Ramon worked for the railroad. He died in 1973. Survivors are her
two beloved daughters Susana Beatriz McWhiney (Grady) of Hattiesburg, Miss and
Pauline Rose DiMarco of Oakland, Ca; Grand daughters Suzanne Rebstock, Ramona
DiMarco and Stephanie Harleen; Great Grand Children Sarah, Patrick, Alex, Anna
who was born this year, 100 years after Cora's birth. Also surviving are nephews
and nieces, George Santsitevanm James Santistevan, Michael Stein, Lucy

41- Luis Marcos Giron ,32, of Albua,NM, Formerly of Taos died Tuesday 2 April
1996 as a result of an accident. He is preceded in death by his father Valentin
Jr. and grand parent Fortunata Trujillo. He attended Schools in Taos, NM and
DeWolfs College of Hairstyling and Cosmetology in Albuq. Luis served in the Army
and after his discharged he returned to Taos. The calling and Service to the
Lord Jesus Christ embarked him to distant lands, Nicarajua, Africa, Mexico and
New Guinea. Employed with Pardo S. Salon he earned numerous awards for his
professional Achivements. His love for God was expressed through his religious
Activities at his church in Albuq, leading youth groups including young adult
groups and his dance and participation with Los Comanches de La Serna, specially
when they danced to honor the birth of Christ on New Years Day. Survived by his

42- Saki Karavas, 74, of Taos, NM. died Tuesday 16 April 1996. He was the
proprietor of La Fonda Hotel on the Taos Plaza for the past 43 years. Born 8
March 1922, in New York City, NY. He was the son of James A. Karavas and Noula
Karavas, she died 19 Sept 1986. Both were born in Greece in the late 1890's.
Saki Karavas was raised in Taos attending public schools here. After graduating
from the Taos High School he attended New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell,
NM. Graduating in 1940. He helped his father build the La Fonda Hotel,
completing it in 1937. After a tour of duty in the Marine Corps, Karavas
returned to Taos to manage La Fonda Hotel and deal in real estate. He was well
known around Taos for his benevolent acts of kindness. A Greek Orthodox mass was
celebrated at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church by Rev. Martin Giannopous. Interment
at the Karavas family plot at Sierra Vista Cemetery. 18 April 1996 A-1.
43- Don Kincaid, 77, was born 16 July 1918 in Duncan, Oklahoma to Clyde Homer
Kincaid and Errol Weaver (Long) Kincaid. Don and his family lived in Texas,
Louisiana, and Michigan while he was young. Later returning to Oklahoma he
graduated from high school in Chandler, Ok. He served as a paratrooper in the
United States Army during World War II. Don married Carol Echols 19 April 1977
in Carney, Ok. They lived in Red River, NM and later moved to Taos, NM Where
they owned and operated gallery K. In January of 1996 they returned to Oklahoma
north of Skiatook, Ok. He passed away 11 April 1996 at Hillcrest Medical Center
in Tulsa, Ok. Preceded in death by his parents and a half brother, Richard
Kincaid. Survived by his wife Carol of the home in Skiatook,Ok; Son Gary and his
wife Elizabeth Kincaid of New York City; Daughters Kathleen Kincaid of
Stillwater, Ok, Annette and husband Kent Kinzie of Stillwater, Ok; Stepsons

Holy Cross Hospital. She taught in Taos County for 3 years and was Taos County
Clerk for 4 years. She retired as a case worker from NM Health and Social
Services Dept. Trinnie was a member of AARP, Ladies Auxiliaries of the VFW Post
3259. She was preceded in death by her husband Tom in 1974, son Charlie in 1962,
sister Eutilia Torres and close companion Joe "Milky" Martinez in 1988. She is
survived by daughters Bernice O. Cardenas (Andy) and Maya O. Romero (Oliver);

52- Joe Sandoval, 69, of Taos Pueblo died Saturday 4 May 1996 at the University
of New Mexico Hospital in Albuq, NM, after complications resulting from cardiac
surgery two week earlier. Sandoval was born 17 Dec 1926. He served in the U. S.
Army in the European Theater near the end of World War II. For many years he
made beautiful pieces of silver and turquoise jewelry. He was one of the first
of the elite Taos Pueblo Snowball fire-fighting crew. He served as Tribal War
Chief in 1979, Lieutenant Governor in 1983 and as Governor of the Tribe in 1985.
He maintained a seat on the Tribal Council until his final days.. He was
preceded in death by a sister Rose Sandoval. Survived by his brothers Luis,
Phillip and John Sandoval; Children Diane S. Lujan, Anne Espinosa, Ben Sandoval,
Margaret S. Romero and Thomas Sandoval; 13 grandchildren. His family also wishes
to recognize the special relationship Sandoval built with Rose Romancito and her
children, Rick, Ron, Douglas and Jeff Romancito and Deborah Concha and all their
children. Buried in The San Geronimo Cemetery at Taos Pueblo Sunday 5 May 1996.

56- Edna Alcott was embraced by our Heavenly Father on May 6 1996. She is
survived by 3 children, 4 grandchildren, 4 cats, 2 horses and 1 dog. (Names not
listed) Born 8 July 1913 in Chicago, Illinois, attended Northwestern University,
led a diverse and interesting life. She was much loved and well known for her
generous spirit, jovial nature and beautiful shawls. She will be missed by many.

57- Hazel Hoffman Sanders, 94, of Taos Died May 7, 1996 in Taos, NM. She came
from Chicago with her husband Frank a famous illustrator and painter to Taos in
1925 where she designed and built the Hobby Horse Ranch on Cruz Alta which used
to be her driveway. There she raised quarter horses and thoroughbreds which she
trained and raced throughout the Southwest. Many Hollywood stunt men came to
Hazel to buy the very best. Upon Frank's death in 1958 she wrote a book on his
life and managed his estate. Anyone who knew Hazel could not help liking her.
She was beautiful, gracious and highly inteligent. Forever an optimist, she
would sometimes smile, look you in the eye and say. "It's a great life if you
don't weaken." She is survived by her sister Myrtle Hagstrom of Taos. 16 May

her family. She was a home maker most of her life. As a young woman she taught

home with her family at her side. She received her Bachelors Degree from
Highland University and retired after 27 years of teaching at the Taos High
School. She was a sponsor of the Future Business Leaders of America and a leader
with the 4-H Club, A charter member of the Taos Home Extension Club and a
volunteer at Holy Cross Hospital. She was an active member of Las Taosenas, La
Luz de Cristo Prayer Group, the Church Choir and Jail Ministry and Our Lady of
Guadalupe Church and the Retired Teachers Association. Mrs. Jaramillo was
preceded in death by her parents Alfredo and Pilar Trujillo, her husband Elaacio
Jaramillo in 1981 and brothers Martin and Charles Trujillo. She is survived by

67- Robert M. Gowing, 80, of Friona, Tx. Died 20 May 1996 at his residence. He
was born 19 March 1916 in Oklahoma City, Ok. He married Mildred Irene Lang, she
died 1-19-1963. Service for Mr. Gowing were held 22 May 1996 at Calvary Baptist
in Friona, Tx. with Rev. Vergil Ichtertz, Pastor officiating. Burial was held at
Sierra Vista Cemetery Taos, NM. Robert Gowing was a member of Calvary Baptist in
Friona, Tx. He lived in Friona, Tx since 1987, moving from Taos, NM. He was a
line Superintendent for Kit Carson Electric for many years. Survived by sons
Robert L. Gowing of Friona, Tx, James Donald Gowing of Las Cruces, NM,Bobby
Hodges of Terrell, Tx; Sister Ruth Gooch of Witchita, Ks and 9 Grandchildren. 30

68- Regina V. Suazo, 93, of Pilar passed away 22 May 1996 in Taos. She was a
lifelong resident and community leader, 4-H Club leader for 12 years and the
first Post Mistress in Pilar. Preceded in death by her husband Amarante Suazo in
1993 and daughter Rachael Garcia in 1991. Survived by a son Leo R. Suazo
(Cecilia) of Pilar; Grand children Leo R. Suazo II (Janell), Silas V. Suazo
(Dana) and Eileen Montoya (George). 6 Great grand children. Burial at the Pilar

69- Stanley I. Witka, 51, of Albuq passed away 24 May 1996. He was preceded in
death by his brother Bert Witka. He is survived by son Stanley Ruben Witka
(Lena) of Fort Irwin, Ca; Daughters Dawn Marie Otero (Rudy) of Albuq and Crucita
Witka of Bernalillo; Parents Ruben and Crucita Vigil of Taos. Burial at the

70- Anna C. McCarthy (Pat) of Taos passed away 28 May 1996. She was a registered
Nurse who worked at the Taos Pueblo during the 1940's and as a Public Health
Nurse for many years. She was instrumental in the creation of the Taos Art
Association. She is survived by her husband George McCarthy; Daughters Patty E.
Sokoll (Cyrus) of Las Vegas,NM and Cathy McCarthy of Taos. Also survived by
grandchildren Danny Trujillo, Victoria Sokoll and Jordan Sokoll; Sister
Catherine Linquist of Laguna Hills, Ca. Burial at Sierra Vista Cemetery. 6 June

71- Bill J. Simmons, 66, of Taos passed away 30 March 1996. He lived in Orange
County, Ca, before moving to Taos in 1987. He was born in Clinton, Ok and raised
in Albuq. He worked in retail management and sales and traveled extensively
throughout the United States. He retired from the retail industry in 1986. He
was a wood worker and artist. Survived by his wife Carol; Children Jennifer
Simmons, Muro (Gregg) of Fullerton, Ca, David Brock and Steven Simmons both of
Albuq and Sharon Townsend of Texas; Grandchildren Jerry Brock, Della and Michael
Townsend and Rene Tatro; Sisters Bernice Gushaed and Shirley Van Rizen both of

72- Conrado Martinez, 75, of Taos passed away 29 may 1986 in Albuq. He was
retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of service, was Asst. Chief of Police,
and retired from Moly Corp. Survived by his wife Margaret Martinez; Children
Wayne C. Martinez and Raymond Martinez both of Albuq and David Martinez (Mayra)
of Farmington; 8 grandchildren; Brothers Tommy and Tony Martinez; sister Orila
Vigil of Utah. Interment with full military honors at Santa Fe National
Cemetery. 6 June 1996 A-13.
72- Pamela Chernoff, known by her friend as "River" died in a car accident in
Cabresto Canyon 29 May 1996. River was active in the Healing and Environmental
Wellness Communities of Taos. She will always be remembered for her flowing
laughter and Spiritual optimism. She leaves behind her family in Connecticut and
Florida. Many, many beloved friends in Taos County, Santa Fe, Boulder and San
Francisco. 6 June 1996 A-13.
73- Marjorie Neder Salazar died peacefully Tuesday 28 May 1996 at Memorial
Medical Center following a lengthy illness. She was born in Mt. Savage Maryland
22 Oct 1918. She is survived by her husband of 52 years Joseph Larkin Salazar; 8
Children Maria Salazar (John), Carla Lovato (Henry), Orlando (Cristina), Anita
Roybal (John), Juan (Mary), Juanita Salazar, Robert (Karen) and James; Sister
Marion King and two brothers Arthur and Roland Neder of Mt. Savage, Maryland.
She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph Neder and Mary Ann Lemmert,
brother Carl and sisters Alice and Kathleen; 10 grandchildren Paul, Marleen
(Husband Arnold), Brian, Daniel, David, Maya, Karen, Christopher, Kristin and
Alex. Marjorie Neder Salazar was a Registered Nurse and served in the U.S. Army
during World War II at the Regional Hospital at Camp Lee, Virginia. She married
Larkin and moved to Pojoaque, NM in 1945. Several years later they moved to Taos
where Marjorie nursed for many years at Holy Cross Hospital. 16 years ago they
moved to Las Cruces, NM. Burial at The Santa Fe National Cemetery. 6 June 1996

74- Alfred "Almon" Baron died suddenly 5 June 1996 at the age of 48. Alfred was
born in Philadelphia, Pa, in 1948. Where he graduated from Northeast Catholic
High School in 1966. He attended PENN State University. He moved to California
during the 1960's where he lived in Haighy Asbury, San Francisco, Santa Rosa and
Big Sur. He was conscientious objector during the Viet Nam War. He became an
apprentice mason in New Jersey at Owens Illinois Glass Company,In 1981 he moved
to Taos and Angel Fire where he developed a reputation as a skilled craftsman of
his profession. He was also a DJ of Reggae and World Beat music as well as a
musician. A Volunteer fire fighter and member of the bricklayer's union.
Survived by his mother Patricia Baron; Sister Patricia Frigo; Brother Victor and
his partner Jenifer Thayer and 4 nephews. Services were held in Angel Fire and
he rests in Elizabethtown. 13 June 1996 B-5.
