1909 obits from the news paper La Revista de Taos.
151- Pablo Trujillo 56 years old from Barney, Union County NM. Died 12 Jan 1909
in his residence. He is survived by his wife, 2 daughters and 3 sons. Names not
listed. Mother Sencion Trujillo now a resident of Taos, NM. Brothers Vidal and
Euilio Trujillo.
152- Guillermo Martinez Age 52 of Black Lake, NM Died 25 Dec 1908. Survived by
his mother and brothers. (Names not listed). Buried in La Loma Cemetery Taos,
NM. Place where most of the Martinez family is buried.
153- Pablo Santillanes died in Miera, NM.11 Jan 1909. No other information
listed.
154- Evaristo Rivera Died 10:00 AM 27 Nov 1908. No Other information listed.
155- Hugh B. Berry Age 53 resident of Taos, NM Died in Santa Fe 28 Jan 1909. He
had long been associated with the restaurant and hotel business in New Mexico
and Colorado. He was originally from Tennessee. He is survived by a brother who
lives in Hochne, Colo. 4 sisters including Mrs. Abbott from Santa Fe, NM. He was
buried in the Fairview cemetery.
156- Maria Juanita Roybal Age 78 of Chamisal, NM. Died 27 Jan 1909 at her
residence.
157- Maria Rita Trujillo Age 89 of Arboles, Colo. Died at her residence 11:00 PM
25 Jan 1909. She was the wife of the deceased Bibian Madrid. Surviving her are
her sons; Jose, Francisco, Jose Leon and Bentura Madrid.
158- Feb 1909 10 year old son (Date and name not listed) of Isidoro Santisevan
of La Loma, Taos, NM died when he was kicked by a horse in the stomach.
159- A. J. Duncan Age 43 died 1 Feb 1909 in the mountains near Penasco, NM. He
was employed by the Santa Barbara Pole and Tie Company. He was killed when a
tree he had just cut fell on him.
160- Claudinita Varos Age 15 years old of Taos, NM. Died 8 Feb 1909. Daughter of
Rev. Camilo Varos died in Albuquerque, NM where she was attending the Harwood
Industrial College. She died of difteria Fiebres (Fever Diphtheria).
161- Teofilo Casias Age 21 years 5 months and 6 days of Walsenburg, Colo. Died 2
Feb 1909 at 12:00 noon of Pulmonia. Son of Reyes Casias and Polonia M. de
Casias. Surving him is his wife Catarina de Casias and grand parents Doloritas
and Ramon Martinez y Valdez.
162- Saraita Marquez Age 3 months 14 days of Vermejo Park, NM. 14 Jan 1909 6:00
AM. She was the daughter of (Names not listed) Cleofas Marquez submitted the
information.
163- Viviana Silva de Madrid Age 77 years 1 month and 28 days of Los Valdeces,
Colo (Monte Vista, Co.) Died 29 Jan 1909 at 8:00 AM.
164- Julianita Garcia de Sanchez Age 88 of Ledoux, NM. Died at her residence 6
Feb 1909. Survived by her husband Tomas Sanchez, 2 sons and 3 daughters. Names
not listed.
165- Jose Sanchez of Garcia, NM Died at his residence 9 Feb 1909. Survived by
his wife Guadalupe G. Sanchez; Sons Camilo, Santiago, Antonio, Francisco,
Patricio and Simon Sanchez; Daughters Marillita L. Ortez, Eulogia S. Ualas,
Lucia S. Trujillo, Emilia S. Salazar and Lupita S. Pena.
166- Rosalia Valdez Age 77 of Conejos, Colo. Died Thursday 11 Feb 1909. At her
residence. She was born in El Rito, NM 10 June 1831.
167- Jose Emitero Duran Died 4 June 1908. He was the son of Fares Duran and
Petrita Garcia.
168- Miguel Archuleta Age 60. Killed 11 Feb 1909 by a Santa Fe Rail Road Train
in La Junta Colo. Miguel Archuleta had problems with his hearing and did not
hear the train approaching as he walked on the rail road tracks.
169- Jacobo Sanchez Age 27 from Trinidad, Colorado Died 15 Feb 1909. Survived by
wife Natividad Vigil de Sanchez; Daughter Marcelina Sanchez; Brothers Jose
Ignacio, Sabino and Antonio Sanchez; Sister Senoba S. de Casias. He was buried
at the Ranchos de Taos Church Cemetery.
170- Juan A. Martinez Age 71 years, 5 months and 15 days died at his residence
in Abiquiu,NM. 15 Feb 1909.He served in the military in 1861 during the American
Civil War. He was elected and served as Rio Arriba County Commissioner and
notary public.He married Maria Dionicita Quintana in 1866. He is survived by his
wife and sons Mareclino Martinez and Juan A. Martinez.
171- Geronimo Died 17 Feb 1909 in Fort Sill Oklahoma where he had been held for
22 years. He died of pulmonia (Pneumonia) and was buried in the Fort Sill
cemetery.
172- Inocencio Quintana Age 14 months died at 8:00 AM Fri 12 March 1909, at his
residence Ranchito de Abajo (Taos, NM) He died of Fiebre Pneumonia. He was the
son of Samuel Quintana.
173- Meliton Trujillo Age 76 years, 2 months and 7 days died 8:00 PM 12 March
1909 at his residence of Ranchitos de Arriba (Taos,NM). He was born Oct 15,1833
in Abiquiu,NM. He is survived by his wife Agustina M. de Trujillo; Sons Lino,
Enrique, Guillermo, Juan and Carlos Trujillo. Daughter Teresita Trujillo.
174- Refugio Martinez Age 48 years 1 month and 6 days from Taos, NM. Died at her
residence Last Saturday March 1909.Died of a heart attack. Wife of Jose M.
Santistevan. Survived by her husband and mother Eulogia Q. Martinez.
175- Rumaldita Apodaca Age 13 years 1 month from Ranchos de Taos, NM. Died at
her residence 1:00 PM Sunday 7 March 1909. She suffered 1 year with Tisis
(Tuberculosis). Daughter of Sabiso Sanchez and Paulita R. Sanchez. Grand parents
Pedro Rivera ad Martita C. de Rivera from San Miguel County, NM.
176- Placida Vigil de Gonzales Age 42 from Antonito Colo.Died at her residence
9:30 PM 4 March 1909. Survivors Husband Eliseo Gonzales; Daughters Eutilia and
Florina Gonzales.
177- Juan Jose Sanchez Age 77 from La Cueva Mora County NM. Died at his
residence at 6:00 PM 28 Feb 1909. He died of Pulmonia (Pneumonia). He was born
in Ranchos de Taos, NM. When he was 25 years old he married Maria Eulogia
Romero. They had 13 offspring of whom 9 survive. No names listed.
178- Teresa Grine de Montaner from Barcelona Spain died as a result of a heart
attack.She died at her residence 4 March 1909. She was the mother of Jose
Montaner the editor and owner of this news paper "La Revista De Taos.
179- Robert C. Pooler was shot and killed in his tavern on the Taos Plaza at
9:00 PM 26 March 1909. Alvan Potter, jeweler and watch repair man was in the bar
drinking whiskey. He was somewhat inebriated and was trying to pick a fight with
P. M. Dolan. Alvan Potter was escorted out of the bar. 10 to 12 people remained
in the bar some of them were playing cards when a gun shot came in to the bar
through a back window. The bullet missed B. M. Blackwell's head by 5 inches but
struck Robert C. Pooler on the right face cheek exiting out the left side of the
face killing him instantly. The bullet struck the wall where it was located. It
was a bullet from a rifle caliber 45 by 70. A search was made and Alvan Potter
was found drunk still dressed in his bed with a rifle caliber 45 by 70 lying
next to him on the bed. Robert Pooler is survived by his wife Maclovia Mares and
a brother (name not listed) At trial Alvan Potter was found guilty and sentenced
to 99 years in prison.
180- Friday 26 March 1909 Antonio Di Tulio in the Raton, NM Plaza, shot Dionisio
Bartolo in the stomach with a pistol. Dionisio Bartolo fled into his brothers
Francisco Bartolo's house located nearby and laid on a sofa. His sister in law
(Francisco Bartolo) wife went to check Dionisio Bartolo to see what was wrong
when Antonio Di Tulio came into the house and started shooting. He shot Mrs.
Bartolo whom had her back to him, on the back of the head killing her instantly.
Antonio Di Tulio fled the scene, Francisco Bartolo came into his house and found
his wife dead and his brother dying. Learning that Antonio Di Tulio was the
killer Francisco Dioniso armed himself with a dagger. He tracked Antonio Di
Tulio and they engaged in mortal combat. Antonio Di Tulio was stabbed and
killed.In all killed were Mrs. Francisco Bartolo (her name not listed), Dionisio
Bartolo and Antonio Di Tulio.
181- Tiburcia Trujillo of La Loma Taos, NM. Died at her residence Monday March
1909. She was the wife of the deceased Reyes Martinez.
182- Antonio Maria Borrego Age 65 years,1 month and 21 day died at 3:30 AM 29
March 1909 at his residence at Rio Del Pueblo, NM. He is survived by his wife
Simonita Borrego; Sons J. E. Borrego, Juan A, Jose Dela Paz and Filadelfio
Borrego; Daughter Adela, Guadalupe B. de Lucero and Juanita B. de Fernandez.
183- David Gold of San Luis, Colorado died at his residence 5 April 1909 at
12:30 PM.
184- Maria Dela Luz Gutierrez Age 56 years and 5 days of Talpa, NM. Died at her
residence Sunday 10 April 1909. She was born 5 April 1858 daughter of Bernabe
Gutierrez and Maria Higina Vigil. She was the wife of Miguel Antonio Romero. She
died of Pneumonia. Buried in the Llano Quemado NM cemetery.
185- Ascencion M. de Chacon of Arroyo Hondo, NM. Died at her residence at 9:00
PM 5 April 1909. She is survived by her husband Anastacio Chacon and 4 sons
names not listed. Buried in the Plaza de Abajo cemetery (Arroyo Hondo) NM.
186- Santiago Gallegos Age 53 of Talpa, NM. Died at his residence 5 April 1909.
Survivors Wife Margarita Martinez, 4 sons and 3 daughter name not listed.Buried
in the Talpa New Mexico Catholic Cemetery.
187- Maria Dilia Garcia Age 2 months and 20 days died 21 March 1909 at 4:00 PM.
She was the daughter of Fileberto Garcia and Escolastica Vigil.
188- Quirino Martinez Age 25 of Taos, NM. Died at his residence 11 April 1909 at
9:00 PM. He was the son of Gabino Martinez. He was buried in the Pueblo Catholic
Cemetery.
189- Manuel Herrera Age 16 years 11 months of Canon de Fernandez, NM. Died 13
April 1909. He was the son of Cresencio Herrera.No other name listed.
190- Delfina V. de Garcia Age 19 years, 5 months and 16 days of Ranchos de Taos,
NM. Died at 4:00 PM. 16 April 1909 at her residence.She was the wife of Daniel
Garcia, daughter of Francisco Vigil and Rafaelita M. de Vigil. She was born 25
Dec 1899. Rafaelita M. de Vigil died Jan 1907. Daniel Garcia and Delfina Vigil
married 15 Aug 1906. She is also survived by a daughter Rafaelita Garcia 1 year
old.
191- Teofila Lopez de Vigil Age 34 of El Rito Rio Arriba County NM. Died at her
residence 5:00 PM 15 April 1909. Survived by husband Rafael Vigil; Sons Jeronimo
and Hipolito Vigil and daughter Margarita Vigil.
192- Sinforsa Gutierrez Age 4 years, 6 months and 14 days of Gardiner, NM. Died
at her residence 14 April 1909. Daughter of Jesus Gutierrez and Ursinia C.
Gutierrez. She suffered from a cold and pneumonia.
193- Lorenzo Baca Age 83 of Las Vegas, NM died at his residence 22 March 1909.
194- Senovio Romero Age 28 years, 6 months 1 day of Truchas, NM. Died at 4:30 AM
29 April 1909 at his house.His death came as result of the Fiebre Escarlatina
(Scarlet Fever). Survived by wife Beatrize D. Romero; Mother Trinidad Sena;
Father and mother in law Pedro A. Dominguezand Facunda Dominguez.
195- Claudio Romero Age 1 year, 4 months and 3 days old. From Valdez, NM Died at
his residence 10:00 AM 13 April 1909. Parents Jose A. Montoya mothers name not
listed. He had Fiebre (Fever) Pneumonia.
196- Esequiel Lucero of Palo Blanco, NM. Died at home 15 April 1909.
197- Emilia L. Vigil Age 16 years, 11 months and 22 days of Watervale Trinchera,
Colo. Died in Trinidad, Colo where she had gone to seek medical help. She died
at 5:00 AM 23 April 1909. She was the wife of Fermin Vigil. She was born 15 May
1892. Daughter of Jose Lujan and Maria M. de Lujan.
198- Crisostoma Archuleta Age 70 years 2 months and 22 days old Of Truchas, Rio
Arriba County NM. Died 20 April 1909 at 4:15 PM.Survivors Son Pedro Archuleta
daughter Mauricia Archuleta.
199- Francisco Sena of Costilla, NM died at home 29 April 1909 Native of Santa
Fe, NM he moved to Costilla, NM in 1871. He served in the military. Was elected
and served several terms as Justice of the Peace for precinct no. 12 Taos
County, NM. Survived by wife Rosario Sena 2 sons and 2 daughters names not
listed.
200- Maria Antonita Chavez de Martinez Age 54 of San Antonio, Colo. Died 29
April 1909 at her residence. Survived by husband Crus Martinez; Sons Antonio,
Lusiano and Jose Catario Martinez; Daughter Tonita M. de Sisneros; Brother
Francisco Chavez.
201- Jose Marcial Gallegos Age 64 years and 13 days of Mora, NM. Died at his
residence 30 April 1909.He was born in the plaza of Santa Gertrudes Mora in
1844. Son of Gaspar Antonio Gallegos and Juana Catarina H. de Gallegos among the
first settlers of the Mora valley. Survivors include his wife Encarnacion V. de
Gallegos; Children Jose G. Gallegos, Tomasita T. de Gallegos wife of Seledon
Trujillo, Esquipula, Julian, Prudencia L. de Gallegos Wife of Jose Dela Luz
Lujan, Gaspar A. Gallegos and Porfiria T. de Gallegos wife of Juan Trujillo.
202- Erinea P. Ensinias From Garcia, NM died at her residence 20 April 1909.
203- Doloritas B. de Fernandez Age 54 of Penasco, NM. Died at her residence
12:00 Noon 7 May 1909. She was the wife of Gracia Fresquez. She died of
Pneumonia.
204- Leonor Muller de Mares Age 51 of Wagon Mound, NM. Died at her home Thursday
9 June 1909. She was a former Taos, NM resident. Wife of Vicente Mares. They
have 3 sons and 3 daughters names not listed.
205- Manuelita Herrera Age 6 years, 2 months and 5 days of Santa Cruz, NM. Died
at her residence 28 May 1909. She was the daughter of Vidal Herrera and Elaisa
L. de Herrera. She died of Fiebre Pheumonia (Fever Pneumonia).
206- Victor Gonzales Age 61 of Capulin, Colo Died at his residence 12 May 1909.
He was buried in the San Jose cemetery.
207- Juan Andres Gutierrez of La Peteca Rio Arriba County NM. Died in camp at
9:00 PM 24 May 1909. He suffered severe stomach pain just before he died.
208- Emilio Gomez Age 47 of Mogote, Colo died at his residence 20 May 1909.
209- Anastacio Chacon of Arroyo Hondo, NM died at his residence at 1:00 PM 22
May 1909. His wife Asencion M.de Chacon had just died 5th day of April 1909.
Surviving him his sons Jose Placido, Jose Pablo, Abelino, and Juan Chacon;
Daughter Maria Gavina and Maria Genoveva Chacon.
210- Juan B. Pacheco Age 77 of Ranchitos de Abajo, NM. Died at his residence
Monday 14 June 1909 at 5:00 AM. Surviving him are his children: Rafael,
Florencio, Secundino, Alcaria and Albina Pacheco.
211- Floripa Archuleta Age 6 years and her brother Jacobo Age 5 years died at
their residence in Alcalde, NM. 24 May 1909 Monday. Father Onesimo Archuleta.
212- Teresita M. de Miranda Age 24 of Clapham,NM Died at her residence 26 May
1909. Survived by her grand mother Desideria Armenta; Mother Esequias A. de
Montoya; Husband and 2 children, 9 sisters and 3 brother. Names not lsted.
213- Antonio Chacon Age 104 of Encenada, NM. Died 26 May 1909 at his home.
Buried at the Park View (Rio Arriba,NM) cemetery. Children surviving are Manuel
G., Jertrudes and Eusiba Chacon.
214- Salvador Lucero Age 22 was killed 7 June 1909 when he was struck by
lighting while he was herding sheep in the arroyo del punche. He was buried in
the cemetery of El Cerritos, Colorado.
215- Fermin Archuleta Age 19 of Truchas, NM. Died 8 June 1909. He drowned, while
herding sheep, he jumped in the arroyo del adobe that has water about 14 feet
deep. He did not know how to swim. His brother in law who was with him did know
how to swim but was unable to save Fermin Archuleta.
216- Pablo Arellano Age 52 was killed 21 June 1909 by his nephew Epimenio
Arellano Age 30 about 8 miles from Mora, NM. Epimenio Struck his uncle Pablo in
the face and head with a rock until he was dead. It is believed that Epimenio
Arellano is insane. The incident occurred in the presence of several Witnesses.
217- B. C. Briggs Superintendent of the Methodist Church in Trinidad, Colo was
shot and killed accidently by an 11 year old boy. B. C. Briggs took the school
children for a one day camping trip and while camping the 11 year old boy found
a pistol. He pointed it at Briggs head and fired killing him instantly.
218- Jesus Maria Cortez Age 27 of Black Lake, NM. Died at his residence 22 May
1909. He is survived by his wife and one child, also his parents. Names not
listed.
219- Altagracia Jaramillo de Herrera Age 68 of Gallinas Rio Arriba County,NM.
Died 16 June 1909. She is survived by her husband Feliciano Herrera and son
Toribio Herrera.
220- Jose Encarnacion Vega of Llano, NM. Died Friday 25 June 1909. He died of
self inflicted stab wounds to the heart. He stabbed himself with a pocket knife
It is said that he had been very sick. His is survived by his brother in law
Seferino Martinez and the large Martinez family from the area.
221- Jose Angel Martinez was killed Thursday 24 June 1909. He was killed in
Enzenada Rio Arriba County, NM (near Tierra Amarilla). He was struck with an
unknown object on the face and head. Poliarpio Jaramillo was arrested and
charged with the murder. Policarpio Jaramillo at his trial in district court
pled guilty and was sentenced to 99 years confinement in prison.
222- Delfina Rivera Resident of Trinidad, Colo. Died 9 July 1909 in Ranchitos,
NM at her mother Basilia M. de Rivera's home. Delfina Rivera was visiting her
mother when she got sick with Fiebre (Fever) Pneumonia and died. She is survived
by her husband Jose U. Roybal 4 son name not listed and her mother mentioned
prio.
223- Richard E. Edgecumbe a long time Taos, NM resident native of England. Died
here Monday 4 June 1909. His great love was fishing and hunting deer. His
funeral and burial was held in Taos, NM.
224- Climaco Salazar son of Blas Salazar of Rancho de Taos, NM. Was employed by
Emilio Gonzales in Monte Vista, Colorado. At 5:00 PM Sunday 18 July 1909 went
swimming in the Rio Del Norte about 4 miles from Monte Vista, Colo. He entered
the river where it was about 4 feet deep. It is believed that he suffered some
type of illness and drowned.
225- Hermenegilda M. de Chavez Age 33 of Holman, NM (Mora County) died at her
home 2 July 1909. Survived by her husband Juan E. Chavez; Son Rosendo Chavez;
Daughters Rosita C. de Sanchez and Ambrosita Chavez.
