Camp or Fort : A difference exists between a Military camp and a Military Fort . A military camp or bivouac is a semi-permanent facility for the lodging of an army. Camps are erected when a military force travels away from a major installation or Fort during training or operations, and often have the form of large campsites. A Military Fort is a Fort ified place or position stationed with troops. It is a more permanent army post. A Military Post can be a camp, Fort or other location used by the military.

The Department of New Mexico was part of the Department of the West then an independent Department following the breakup of that Division into the Department of the Missouri of the United States Army during the Civil War. On July 27, 1865 the Military Division of the Pacific was created under Major General Henry W. Halleck, replacing the Department of the Pacific, consisting of the Department of the Columbia that now consisted of the State of Oregon and the Territories of Washington and Idaho and the expanded Department of California that now consisted of the States of California and Nevada and the Territory of New Mexico and Territory of Arizona.
