Hello Friends. For some time I wanted to compile a list
of Territorial Soldiers in New Mexico. If one searches through our
Military Pages you will discover several
exhibits which contain lists of Military men in Territorial New Mexico. This is
my first effort to extract from censuses the forts, camps and places where soldiers
were stationed before Statehood. Bear in mind that before 1863 New Mexico and Arizona
were one Territory. Thus, forts may have been in one state then another after the
territory was divided. In this exhibit you will notice Arizona listings and New
Mexico listings.
This exhibit is not complete. I have searched the 1850 to 1880 census from the work
by Lydia Uribe and Virginia Grace to extract these listings, and other exhibits
as noted. The following are not census transcriptions but extracts. Please view
the actual census for details. I am asking for your help to complete this exhibit.
I need the remaining 1885 and 1900 census locations where soldiers were listed.
If anyone has time to search those censuses, please let
me if you find NM forts, camps, or
places where soldiers were stationed. I will abstract the names or one name. The
following contains names of military men and relatives and workers. I debated if
I should organize these by Camp name, or by County or by Year.
